Abstract

Uppsatsen handlar om hållbar planering av besöksdestinationer och hur man tar naturen i anspråk i
samband med turismen med avgränsning på Öland. Syftet med uppsatsen är att ta reda på vilka
konceptuella strategier som Ölands kommuner skulle kunna tillämpa för att hållbart utveckla
turismen samtidigt som man bevarar och skyddar Ölands landskap. Inkluderingen av
Landskapskonventionen som ett ramverktyg präglar uppsatsen och är ett tillvägagångssätt genom
att säkerställa att turismens utveckling på ön tar hänsyn till bevarande och skydd av naturen på
Öland.
Metoden som är vald för arbetet är fallstudie med semistrukturerade intervjuer och relevanta
policydokument för att förstå hur kommunerna på Öland hanterar turismen och landskapet idag.
Vidare redovisar uppsatsen en teoretisk undersökning som visar konceptuella strategier för hållbar
utveckling både nationellt och internationellt. Öland är valt som fokusområde utifrån öns starka
naturvärde och besöksnäring.
Genom att undersöka policydokumenten och insikterna från intervjuerna skapas en bild av hur
situationen på ön ser ut idag och vad kommunerna gör för att hållbart utveckla Öland. Ett
resonemang förs om de konceptuella strategierna diskuteras om de kan tillämpas på Öland för att
vidareutveckla turismen och landskapet vilket ger en bredare kontext för utmaningarna och kan
fungera som ett tillvägagångssätt för att möta dessa. Slutsatserna landar bland annat i att Öland
som besöksdestination överlag är relativt hållbar om man bortser från bilismen. Att ändra synsättet
och behovet kring bil som transportmedel kan vara svårt och kräver därför exempelvis
implementering av de konceptuella strategierna som uppsatsen utforskar.

This essay focuses on sustainable planning of tourist destinations and how nature is used in
connection with tourism, with a demarcation on Öland. The essay's purpose is to explore
conceptual strategies that Öland’s municipalities could apply to further develop tourism while
preserving and protecting Öland’s landscape sustainably. The Landscape Convention characterizes
the essay and is included as a framework to ensure that the development of tourism is handled
sustainably and considers the preservation and protection of Öland’s nature.
The chosen method for the essay is a case study involving semi-structured interviews and relevant
policy documents to understand how Öland's municipalities manage tourism and the landscape.
Additionally, the essay presents a theoretical chapter which gives account to conceptual strategies
for sustainable development both nationally and internationally. Öland is selected as the focal area
due to the island's strong natural value and tourism industry.
The political documents and insights from the interviews held with working professionals from the
municipalities provides a comprehensive picture of Öland’s current situation and about the
opportunities and challenges the municipalities face. The conceptual strategies are discussed
regarding their applicability to Öland, offering a broader context for the challenges and might
serve as an approach. Conclusions include that Öland as a tourist destination, is generally
sustainable, except for the issues related to car usage. Changing the needs and perspectives
surrounding cars can be challenging, requiring the application of the conceptual strategies
presented in the essay
