Abstract

Denna uppsats undersöker de upplevelser och berättelser om landskapet, platsen och dess historia som
det nedre loppet av den idag kulverterade och osynliga bäcken Svartbäcken i Uppsala bär på, med fokus på
vattnet i landskapet. Det teoretiska ramverket som använts har rört teorier om platsen, platsens minne och
landskapets språk tillsammans med perspektiv på individen och vattnets kretslopp i det moderna samhället.
För att besvara frågeställningarna har en ansats till ett brett och holistiskt angreppssätt på landskapet runt
bäcken intagits. Genom att studera historiska kartor, fotografier, litteratur, planhandlingar, tidningsartiklar
samt intervjuer och möten med personer med en geografisk koppling till bäckens nedersta lopp och fält-
besök har en komplex bild av bäcken, platsen och dess förgångna växt fram. Denna uppsats menar att en
belysning av bäcken Svartbäcken kan bidra med ett förenande inslag i landskapet och synliggöra Uppsalas
blöta natur även om inga konkreta förslag på fysisk uppöppning presenteras. Runt den kulverterade bäcken
har marken historiskt beskrivits som sumpig, blöt och källa till hälsoproblem, något som idag knappt
märks av tack vare tekniska åtgärder. Samtidigt pekas området ut för risk att drabbas av översvämningar av
Fyrisån i riskprognoser. Vid närmare undersökning av platsen har spår i dagens landskap dock identifierats.
Kulverten är på vissa sträckor synlig som en höjdrygg genom sättningar i marken runtomkring den och
odlare märker av hur växterna ovanpå den påverkas. Platsen runt bäckens nedersta lopp huserar flera större
infrastrukturelement som bil- och järnvägar kopplade till den moderna staden men som även ger den ett
avskuret läge. Samtidigt har det identifierats en rumslig förskjutning av platsnamnet Svartbäcken genom
historien med en komplex relation mellan bäcken och platsnamnet men där kulverteringen av bäcken elimi-
nerat dess tydliga roll i landskapet och som gränsmarkör

This thesis examines the experiences and stories of the landscape, place and history of the lowest course
of the culverted brook Svartbäcken in Uppsala. The theoretical framework has consisted of theories
regarding place, memory of the place and the language of landscape along with theoretical perspectives
on the individual and the water cycle in the modern society. In order to answer the question formulations,
an effort to a holistic approach to the landscape around the brook has been made. By studying historical
maps, photographies, texts planning documents, news articles and interviews with people with an geograp-
hical connection to the brook and explorative site visits, a complex picture of the landscape and its past
has emerged. This thesis suggests that shedding light on the brook Svartbäcken can contribute to a more
connecting element in the landscape and show Uppsalas wet history even though no physical deculverting
is proposed. The ground around the culverted brook has historically been described as wet, marshy and a
source of health issues, which today is barely noticed in the landscape thanks to technical measures. Risk
of flooding in the study area around the lowest course of the brook due to high water levels in the Fyriså
river is also pointed out in future risk assessments. Studying the culverted brook closer, several traces of
it has been identified in the landscape. The culvert is visible as a discrete ridge through subsidences in the
neighboring ground and gardeners notice how the plants growing upon it adapts to the conditions in the
soil that it gives. Within the area around the brook, several large scale infrastructures such as car- and railro-
ads connecting to life in the modern city is located which gives the place many barriers. A spatial movement
of the palace name Svartbäcken through history has also been identified with a complex picture of the
relationship between the brook and the places bearing its name but where the culverting of the brook has
eliminated its distinct role in the landscape and as a perceived border.
