Abstract

Parodontal sjukdom (gingivit och parodontit) är en av hundens vanligaste sjukdomar. Daglig hemtandvård är gold standard för profylax och de flesta hundägare anser att hundens tandhälsa är mycket viktig. Trots detta visar flera studier att efterlevnaden av råd är mycket låg avseende tandborstning. Därmed finns ett stort utrymme för förbättring och en potential att öka livskvalitet och hälsa för en många av våra hundar. Syftet med denna studie var att följa upp och undersöka efterlevnaden av råd avseende hemtandvård till ägare av hundar med parodontit vilka genomgått professionell tandrengöring (PTR) samt med hjälp av fritextsvar få en uppfattning faktorer som kan påverka utfallen.
En enkät skickades ut via e-post till hundägare (n=63) vars hundar hade fått en parodontit-diagnos, genomgått PTR på Universitetsdjursjukhuset (UDS) i Uppsala och fått instruktioner om daglig tandborstning. Enkätundersökningen kompletterades med telefonintervjuer och den totala svarsfrekvensen var 57 %. Frågorna syftade till att undersöka hemtandvårdsrutiner samt hund-ägarens upplevelse, attityd och motivation till tandborstning.
Hundägares rutiner, upplevelser, attityder och motivation presenteras med tillhörande stapel-diagram. Över hälften (53 %) utför tillfredsställande hemtandvård, vilket överensstämmer med tidigare studier men innebär att förebyggande vård uteblir för nästintill hälften av hundarna i den här studien. Möjliga orsaker och förklaringar till resultatet har identifierats genom kompletterande fritextsvar.
En bredare kunskap behövs kring faktorer som möjliggör eller hindrar hundägare från att uppnå goda hemtandvårdsrutiner, samt hur identifiering och hantering av dessa ska implementeras i praktiken. Med detta följer också större krav på att förbereda veterinären för en sådan uppgift.

Periodontal disease includes both gingivitis and periodontitis and is one of the most common diseases in the dog. Daily dental home care prevents disease and most dog owners consider the dog's dental health to be very important. Despite this, several studies show that compliance to advice regarding tooth brushing is very low. There is thus a big opportunity for improvement and a potential to increase the quality of life for a remarkable proportion of the dog population. The purpose of this study was to follow up and investigate compliance regarding dental home care for dogs with periodontitis and also investigate and with the help of free text answers get an idea of what factors may influence the success or failure in achieving a satisfying brushing routine.
A questionnaire survey was distributed in an e-mail to dog owners (n=63) whose dogs have been diagnosed with periodontitis, have undergone a professional dental cleaning at the University Animal Hospital (UDS) in Uppsala and received instructions on daily tooth brushing following the treatment. The survey was supplemented by a telephone interview and the total response rate was 57%. The survey questions aimed to investigate dental home care routines as well as give insight to the dog owner's experience, attitude and motivation regarding tooth brushing.
Dog owners' routines, experiences, attitudes and motivation are presented with associated bar charts. 53 % carried out satisfactory home dental care, which is consistent with previous studies but also indicates that preventive care is missing for almost half of the dogs included in this study. Possible reasons and explanations for the results have been identified through additional free text answers.
A wider knowledge is needed concerning the factors that may prevent dog owners from achieving satisfactory dental home care, as well as how the identification and management of these should be implemented in veterinary practice. With this comes also the need for better preparing veterinarians facing such a task.
