Abstract

Green-blue infrastructure and nature-based solutions in the city are becoming increasingly important with the ongoing climate changes. In the urban landscape, green roofs can contribute important ecosystem services to, for example, delay stormwater runoff from roofs, reduce noise near construction, clean air, increase biodiversity and improve cultural and aesthetic values. At SLU, a research project on "Aging green-blue infrastructure: how does green roof delivery of ecosystem services change when the systems get older?" With inspiration from that research work, the ideas for the content of this essay were formed.
In this work, I have chosen to focus on extensive and semi-intensive green roofs, i.e. the thinner green roofs that you see from a distance, unlike roof gardens or courtyards where you can walk around. Furthermore, my focus has been to investigate which green roofs are the most aesthetically pleasing. It has long been known that green roofs are more appreciated than traditional hard roofs.
The aim was to find out from 30 photos which vegetation/expression the public, and also specifically architects, prefer most on a green roof. The photographic material produced as part of the SLU research project was taken at three different seasons and meant that it was also interesting to investigate whether it is the same roof that is the ugliest/finest across all seasons, or if it differs.
The survey was carried out with 2 different digital surveys, one for the target group the public, and one for the target group architects. 68 responses came in from the public and 15 responses from professionals. The results showed that the meadow-like, flowering and more varied roofs were more popular than the more traditional sedum roofs. In addition, the survey showed that the roofs are most attractive as they look in summer and autumn. Furthermore, the study showed that professionals and the public largely prefer the same roof, but that professionals give the roofs higher score than the public does. Some questions were specifically directed at architects and indicated, among other things, that the likely reasons why green roofs are not chosen more often are because clients think it is too expensive, have poor experience or a lack of knowledge. However, the number of respondents is so small that it is not possible to draw any conclusions from the questions to professionals.
