Abstract

A previous study of the genetic trend in the Swedish warmblood horse (SWB) had shown that the genetic progress entirely was a result of stallion selection and that the selection of mares was almost non-existent. If the selection of mares could be improved, it would lead to a greater genetic progress. Therefore, the SWB mare selection programme was introduced with the aim to encourage mare owners to use high quality mares in breeding. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the SWB mare selection programme. The questions were how these mares have acquired, how the mare population is structured, in what proportion they have been used in breeding and how many of all Swedish Warmblood mares that are mares included in the SWB selection programme.

This study was based on information about the mares included in the SWB selection programme from the year 2010-2021 provided in Excel files from the Swedish Warmblood Association. The files contained information about whether the mares had participated in young horse test, riding horse test, competition and their BLUP-index for jumping and dressage and also which criteria the mares had achieved to be mares included in the SWB selection programme. The performance of progenies of the mares was provided by SLU in an Excel-file. Statistics were put together in Excel and chi-squared test was used to investigate if frequencies from different groups had a significant difference.

The result showed that 28.5 - 37.5% of all the coverings in SWB in the years 2010-2021, were coverings with mares included in the SWB selection programme. Most mares were only covered once during the period and the average age at covering was between 11.7 - 13.7 years. It was clear that at young horse tests and riding horse tests the progenies of mares included in the SWB selection programme had performed better than progenies by mares not included in the SWB selection programme.

The conclusion of the study was that progenies from mares included in the SWB selection programme performed better at young horse test and riding horse test then progenies by mares not included in the SWB selection programme. Therefore, we recommend to continue to encourage breeders to test their mares early and to use their mares included in the SWB selection programme for breeding and at a young age.
