Abstract

än i skritt.

Orthopedic injuries are common problems among sport horses, and the major symptom is movement
asymmetry/lameness. Earlier studies have observed that many horses judged as healthy by the
owners have movement asymmetries of similar magnitude as horses evaluated for clinical lameness.
Especially high prevalence of movement asymmetries was observed in young Standardbred trotters.
The threshold for when a movement asymmetry is caused by pain and defined as a lameness can be
questioned and there may be other reasons for movement asymmetries. Examining the prevalence
of movement asymmetry in foals could give information if the asymmetry is innate, since the
asymmetry is less likely to be caused by injuries or human handling at an early age. The purpose of
this study was therefor to examine the prevalence of movement asymmetry in foals and compare
Warmblood and Standardbred trotters. Many Standardbred trotters have a mutation in a gene called
DMRT3, which enables trot at high speeds. The mutation potentially allows an increased rhythmical
variation in the gait pattern and could therefore cause more movement asymmetry. Because of this
the hypothesis was that Standardbred trotter foals would have a higher prevalence of movement
asymmetry than Warmblood foals.
Assessment of lameness/movement asymmetry is mainly performed in trot due to the
symmetrical nature of this gait and the higher loading of the limbs compared to walk. The human
eye can detect movement asymmetries larger than 25%. To detect changes in movement smaller
than 25% an objective analyzing system can be used. With Lameness Locator from Equinosis the
head, withers and pelvis movement can be analyzed with attached accelerometer sensors. Using this
system, the difference between the two lowest and highest positions of head, withers, and pelvis
during a stride is quantified.
Of the 51 foals that were assessed, 27 were warmbloods and 24 were standardbred trotters. The
foals were assessed when trotting alongside the mare. Data were sent in real time to a computer. The
head and pelvis vertical acceleration was transformed to displacement and the asymmetry variables
HDmax, HDmin and PDmax, PDmin, were calculated. The asymmetry variables mean during a
measurement give information of degree of asymmetry and which leg that caused this movement
asymmetry. The threshold for movement asymmetry used in this study was absolute values ≥ 6 mm
for the head movement and ≥ 3 mm for the pelvic movement.
Of 51 examined foals, 31 showed an asymmetry on at least one asymmetry variable. Of 27
warmbloods, 11 showed asymmetry and of 24 standardbred trotters, 20 showed asymmetries in at
least one asymmetry variable. With a Mann-Whitney’s test, there was a significant difference
(p=0,05) in magnitude of the two asymmetry variables HDmax and PDmin between the warmbloods
and standardbred trotters, where the Standardbred trotters were more asymmetrical than the
warmbloods. Of all 51 examinations 27 of them had high variation with a standard deviation above
120% of the mean value.
Of all foals examined in this study, 60.8% showed movement asymmetry at the trot, 40.7% of
the warmblood and 83.3% of the Standardbred trotters showed asymmetry, which was slightly lower
or equal to the prevalence showed in earlier studies. The conclusion of this study was that of all foals
examined, the prevalence of movement asymmetry was 60.8 % among warmblood and 83.3%
among Standardbred trotters. The hypothesis that the foals of Standardbred trotters would be more
asymmetrical than foals of Warmblood was confirmed. However, many measurements had a high
variation between strides. Further studies are needed to explore the subject.
