Abstract

The forests ability to bind carbon dioxide is a well-established fact. This study compares three estates prospect of selling the service of carbon dioxide binding to three different companies. Two of the estates differ when it comes to composition of the forest age distribution while the third one has a higher growth rate, lower allowed age to clear-cut and higher volume of wood per hectare then first two.

The companies differ with the first one aiming for increasing the age of clear-cuts, the second aims at increasing the standing volume of wood on the hole estate and the third one aims at fertilizing forest stands at a younger age then the conventional ten years before clear-cutting. This study leaves the question of which of these alternatives that is best for lowering the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to the more knowledgeable. Instead the study focuses on what alternative will give the best net present value for the forest owner compared to the conventional clear-cut strategy. To find out on what level the companies’ compensation is on they were all contacted and the given levels was later used in the study.

The thesis shows that all estates with an even age distribution gets the highest net present value by agreeing to postpone their clear-cuts by ten years and by the end of the contract carry out the planned clear-cuts. The study shows that the levels of monetary compensation is high enough for the forest owner to consider if clear-cutting is the preferable option with the price of timber that is assumed in the study. Estates with younger forests shall consider going into business with the company that pays for increased volume of wood.

Fertilising your forest at an earlier stage performs a required rate of return up to four percent (five for estate number three with the lower age for clear-cuts) for all estates as long as the forest owner thins out at least 30 percent of the increased growth given by the fertilization effect ten years after fertilization.
