Abstract

I denna enkätstudie
I utbildande syfte vore

Overweight and obesity is a common disease among dogs. With this survey dog owner’s knowledge
of overweight, weight assessment, and feeding routines of dogs are assessed in relationship to their
own dog’s body condition. The survey is also used as a tool to educate the dog owners in how to use
body condition score (BCS) when assessing the body condition of their dog. The survey study was
implemented digitally by distribution through social media, where the respondents answered the
survey questions and assessed body condition scores from test images and on their own dog. Data
from 207 respondents was collected through the survey study and the results were processed and
presented descriptive.
The results from the assessment of the test images show that the dog owners had
difficulties. The most common mistake was an overestimation of the body condition. A large
proportion of dog owners (40%) was not familiar with the body condition score scale and about 50%
did not feel confident in using the scale to assess body condition. Almost all dog owners (99%)
defined themselves as capable of assessing their own dog’s body condition. Regardless of the dog
owners’ assessment of their own dog (underweight, ideal weight or overweight) over 90 %
considered that they fed their dog according to body condition and energy requirements. The dog
owners had problems assessing the test images digitally, why their assessment of their own dogs
BCS was considered unreliable. It is therefore difficult to study the relationship between the dog
owners’ knowledge about overweight, BCS assessment, feeding routines and their own dog’s body
condition. Even though the study identified that dog owners potentially lack knowledge in body
condition assessment, many dog owners considered the survey unhelpful and not educational. The
reason for the dog owners’ difficulties to correctly assess the body condition of the test images, and
possibly their own dog’s body condition, can relate to that the study was performed digitally and
that no information on how to assess body condition visually was included, alternatively the
respondents had good knowledge about problems relating to overweight and thereby did not want
to underestimate the BCS of the test images.
The result shows that dog owners need more education to be able to properly assess
their dog’s body condition using a BCS scale; they do, however, seem to have acceptable basic
knowledge about overweight as a disease and the health consequences that come with it. For future
studies it would be a great advantage if the dog owners got the chance to palpate the dogs that they
are to assess, to get more reliable results and enable better education regarding the physical
assessment. To evaluate the dog owner's assessment of their own dog, it would be favourable if
trained animal health care professionals assess the dog as well, to be able to draw conclusions about
the reliability of the dog owner's assessment. For educational purposes, it would also be preferable
if animal health care professionals became accustomed to practically teaching BCS assessment when
encountering with dog owners, as only half of the dog owners in this study had been taught BCS
assessment prior to this study. The information and education from trained professionals will enable
dog owners to be more aware of, and, gain good knowledge in the assessment of body condition.
This will help dog owners to prevent poor health due to overweight in their own dogs.
