Abstract

Den här rapporten undersöker trädgårdmästarbostadens trädgård tillhörande Tosterup slott. Tosterup
slott ligger i Tomelilla kommun, Skåne. Slottet och slottsparken har en lång och väl dokumenterad
historia. Släkten Ehrensvärd har ägt slottet och dess ägor i flera generationer. Väster om slottet ligger
en gammal trädgårdsmästarbostad som hyrs ut till hyresgäster. Det här huset och dess trädgård har
inte lika väl dokumenterad historia, vilket är något som utforskas i den här uppsatsen. Uppsatsens
frågeställningar menar på att dokumentera trädgårdens nuvarande form och växtmaterial, titta på
hur den har sett ut historiskt samt ändrats över tid. Syftet med detta är att bidra med mer information
om hur en trädgårdsmästarbostads trädgård har sett ut, då det är ett relativt outforskat område.
Det material som rör trädgårdens nuvarande form har samlats in genom en inventering. Denna metod
innefattar en grundlig genomgång av trädgården som resulterat i en nulägesplan. På denna
nulägesplan finns alla arter som varit möjligt att identifierade utplacerade på sin rätta plats. Ytan
som inventerades avgränsades till de grönytor som innefattas i de nuvarande hyresgästerna i
trädgårdsmästarbostadens hyreskontrakt. Med andra ord, trädgårdsmästarbostadens nuvarande
trädgård. Efter inventeringen började eftersökningarna på historiskt material om platsen. Det
material som presenteras i uppsatsen kommer ifrån kartor, fotografier, flygfoton, Tosterups
godsarkiv och muntliga källor.
Det första som presenteras av det historiska materialet är en karta från år 1779. I den kartan syns
trädgårdsmästarbostaden. Det har funnits en trädgårdmästarbostad på samma plats sedan 1700-talet.
Dock har den tillhörande trädgården ändrat form över tid. Marken har arrenderats ut till
trädgårdsmästare för att odla mat till de boende på slottet. Det finns specifika arter, som köpts in till
trädgårdens konto, dokumenterat i en kassabok från 1899–1901. Bland annat fanns sparrisplantor,
potatis och blåregn dokumenterade. I resultatet presenteras även namn på tidigare trädgårdsmästare
samt många personliga minnen rörande platsen som de tidigare ägarna av Tosterup, Jörgen och
Gunilla Ehrensvärd, bidragit med. Trädgårdsmästeriet lades ner i slutet av 1960-talet. Efter det har
trädgården blivit en del av slottsparken i sin karaktär. Det som finns på platsen idag är framför allt
ett resultat av många olika människor som på något sätt varit en del av platsen, men även naturens
gång. Almar och hästkastanjer som tidigare prytt området har insjuknat, dött och ersatts av andra
träd. Det tydligaste spåret av trädgårdsmästeriets dagar som går att se idag är hur gräset växer på
den tidigare odlingsmarken. Där skiftar gräsmattan mellan mossa och gräs i form av ränder, likt hur
odlingarna ser ut på ett flygfoto från 1946.
Även om denna undersökning har bidragit med ny information om trädgårdmästarbostadens
trädgård så finns det mer att undersöka. Inventeringen som genomfördes bör fortsättas att göras
under ett helt år så alla växter kan dokumenteras och analyseras. Dessutom finns det fler spår att
följa upp. Ett exempel på det är att titta på släktarkivet tillhörande familjen Ehrensvärd som finns i
Stockholm. Materialet kan ha mycket mer att berätta. Denna uppsats har bidragit med en pusselbit
till det stora pusslet om hur trädgårdsmästares liv har sett ut i Sverige genom tiderna.

This report examines the garden related to an old gardener’s house. The gardener’s house belongs
to Tosterup’s castle, placed in Tosterup, Tomelilla, in the region of Skåne, Sweden. This castle has
an old and well documented history that stretches back to the 14th century. The family Ehrensvärd
has been the owners of Tosterup’s castle, and the grounds belonging to it, during several past
generations. The gardener’s house and its garden are located on the west side of the castle. It has
been rented out to different tenants since the last gardener moved out. This garden has not got the
same well documented history as the castle, and that is what is going to be examined in this essay.
The questions that are being answered in this rapport aim to make a thorough documentation of
what the garden looks like in present time, then try to find out about its history. With that
knowledge comparisons have been made and some of the history of garden understood.
The information presented about the garden’s current state was gathered through taking inventory
of all the plants existing. The result of the inventory is presented in the form of an illustration
where all the plants are placed on their exact place. The aera that was studied was limited to the
parts of the garden that currently belongs to the gardener’s house. After that, the research about the
garden’s history started. That information comes from studying old maps, photographs, aerial
photos, Tosterup’s castle’s archive and through talking to people connected to the area in some
way.
The earliest documentation of the gardner’s house and garden that was found is dated in the year
1779. It is a map where the house can be seen very clearly. The house has been built sometime
during the 18th century and has stayed in its place since then. The same thing cannot be said for the
garden though. The shape of it changes over time. The gardener rented the garden and had a deal
with the owners of the castle that he would provide them with the crops that was grown there.
Specific kinds of plants, that were bought to the garden, can be found in book about the castle
finances from 1899-1901. E.g., Wisteria, potatoes and asparagus. Names of past gardeners are also
presented in this essay. All these discoveries are combined with the memories from Jörgen and
Gunilla Ehrensvärd, who were the previous owners of Tosterup’s castle. The last gardener moved
out in the late 1960s, and with that the growing of edible crops ended in the area being discussed.
After that, the gardener’s garden turned into a place that looks like the rest of the gardens
belonging to the castle. Today, the gardener’s garden has few traces of its time as a field that was
growing crops but has more traces of all the different people being involved since. And the ay of
nature has also put its mark on it. Ulmus glabra and Aesculus hippocastanum that previously
graced the area with their presents has over the years sicken, died and been replaced by other trees.
The most apparent trace of the gardens days as a field for crops can be seen in the grass. Streaks of
moss and grass vary in lines that looks very similar to how the field look like in an aerial photo
from 1946.
Even though this essay presents new information, there are lots of things to continue research
regarding the gardener’s garden in Tosterup. Inventory of plants should be done during a whole
year, so that other sorts of plants that bloom during different seasons can be documented and
analysed. There are also other sources of information that could be relevant e.g., Ehrensvärd’s
family archives located in Stockholm. This essay contributes with one of the pieces of the puzzle
that is the history of gardeners in Sweden.
