Abstract

How does one design with respect to the place?
A large part of our built environment today
has taken existing natural prerequisites into
little or no consideration, which has resulted in
a widespread loss of place – a bland expression
of architetcure.
The answer may lie in our fundamental understanding of place and how we choose to
perceive our surroundings. The phenomenological approach to architecture and the concept of genius loci as outlined by the Norwegian architect Christian Norberg-Schulz has been
the foundation for the qualitative place analysis, of which this bachelor thesis is based upon.
A naturalistic campsite by the lake Sävsjön
in Värmland is today in need of a holistic development plan. Through an understanding
of trends in nature-based tourism, a thorough
analysis of the character of the site and a study on the architecture of Louisiana Museum of
Modern Art in Humlebæk, it is the the aim of
this thesis to serve as a pre-study to this development plan.
The building of new camping huts is backed
up by the trend of soft adventure – experiencing nature without sacrificing the comfort of
modern life. The study trip to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art provided ideas for the
interplay between architecture and landscape
and the landscape analyses of Sävsjön showed
possible implementations of these ideas to strengthen the on site-experience.

Hur gestaltar man med hänsyn till platsen?
En betydande del av vår byggda miljö idag visar påfallande lite hänsyn till platsens naturliga
förutsättningar, ibland ingen, vilket har lett till
en utbredd platsförlust – en intetsägande arkitektur.
Svaret kan kanske ligga i vår grundläggande
förståelse av begreppet plats och hur vi väljer
att uppfatta vår omgivning. Idén om genius
loci och den norske arkitekten Christian Norberg-Schulz’ fenomenologiska teori om arkitektur har legat till grund för den kvalitativa
stedsanalysen, den analysmetod som detta kandidatarbete tar utgångspunkt i.

Värmland är idag i behov av en holistisk utvecklingsplan. Genom en förståelse för trender inom naturturism, en grundlig analys
av platsens karaktär och en studie av konstmuseet Louisianas arkitektur, är målet med
detta arbete att vara en förstudie till denna utvecklingsplan.
Byggandet av nya campingstugor får stöd i
trenden soft adventure – naturnära upplevelser
som inte ger upp allt för mycket av det moderna
livets komfort. Studiebesöket på konstmuseet
Louisiana gav gestaltningsidéer som kan stärka
samspelet mellan arkitektur och landskap, och
landskapsanalyserna av Sävsjön visade möjligheter att implementera dessa idéer för att stärka campingbesökarnas platsupplevelse.
