Abstract

Övervikt och fetma är vanligt förekommande hälsoproblem hos katter världen över som predisponerar för diverse sjukdomar samt kan förorsaka en sämre livskvalité. Överviktiga katter når sällan
sin idealvikt och många som gör det går upp i vikt igen efter avslutat viktminskningsprogram. De
hälsorisker som föreligger vid övervikt hos katt i kombination med påvisade svårigheter med en
lyckad viktnedgång talar för en ökad betydelse av att jobba förebyggande mot olämplig viktökning.
Enligt djurägare tycks bilden av en katt i normalt hull vara en något överviktig katt då många tenderar att underskatta sin katts body condition score (BCS). Få studier har undersökt hur veterinärer
jobbar kommunikativt med djurägare i syfte att förebygga utvecklande av fetma hos katt.
Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur veterinärer, genom kommunikation, till djurägare
jobbar förebyggande mot fetma samt att skatta prevalensen av övervikt/fetma hos katter som besöker
djurkliniker i Sverige.
En webbaserad enkät skickades ut till smådjurskliniker i Sverige. Målgruppen var kliniskt verksamma veterinärer som i sitt arbete mottog kattpatienter. Enkäten besvarades fullständigt av 158
personer.
Studiens resultat indikerar att veterinärer vid djurkliniker i Sverige i ganska hög grad bedömer
(85 %) och journalför (72 %) BCS hos en majoritet av sina kattpatienter. 60 % av veterinärerna
kommunicerar övervikt hos katt till djurägaren i en majoritet av fallen. Tidsbrist (54 %) och prioritering av annan diagnos (71 %) visade sig vara de två främsta orsakerna till att övervikt ej diskuterades med djurägare. En majoritet (56 %) upplevde sig inneha tillräcklig kunskap för att utforma ett
viktminskningsprogram för katt. 47 % av respondenterna skattade att mer än 60 % av de kattpatienter som de mottog under de senaste sex månaderna hade ett BCS över 5 och 35 % skattade att 40–
60 % av katterna hade BCS över 5.

Overweight and obesity are common health problems in cats all over the world and predispose to
various diseases and can cause a poorer quality of life. Overweight cats rarely reach their ideal
weight and many who does regain their previous weight after completing a weight-loss program.
The health risks associated with overweight in cats in combination with proven difficulties with a
successful weight loss speak for an increased importance of working preventively against inappropriate weight gain. According to pet owners, the image of a cat in ideal weight seems to be a slightly
overweight cat as many tend to underestimate their cats body condition score (BCS). Few studies
have examined how veterinarians work communicatively with pet owners to prevent the development of obesity in cats.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how veterinarians, through communication to animal
owners, work preventively against obesity and to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity
in cats visiting animal clinics in Sweden.
A web-based questionnaire was sent out to small animal clinics in Sweden. The target group was
clinically active veterinarians who received cat patients in their work. The questionnaire was completely answered by 158 persons.
The results of the study indicate that veterinarians at animal clinics in Sweden assess (85%) and
record (72%) BCS in their cat patients to a high degree. 60% of the veterinarians communicate
overweight in cats to the pet owner in most cases. Lack of time (54%) and prioritization of another
diagnosis (71%) were the two main reasons why obesity was not discussed with pet owners. A
majority (56%) felt they had sufficient knowledge to design a weight-loss program for cats. 47% of
respondents estimated that more than 60% of their cat patients in the last six months had a BCS over
5 and 35% estimated that 40-60% of cats had BCS over 5.
