Abstract

Utöver detta samlades information in gällande
Klinisk kemiska laboratoriet, UDS.

Pancreatitis is a disease which can be hard to diagnose for several different reasons, including a
varying clinical picture and the lack of a single test that can, with certainty, establish the diagnosis.
In the diagnostic workup of a dog with suspected pancreatitis it is important to consider the history,
clinical findings, ultrasound results and results from blood tests.
Analyzing pancreas-specific lipase (canine pancreatic lipase, cPL) is an important part of the
diagnostics when suspecting pancreatitis. The test measures the concentration of lipase molecules
originating from acinar cells in the pancreas, which is why increasing levels are only seen when
there is an ongoing disease in the pancreas.
A retrospective study of medical records was performed with the aim to examine cPL-results
analyzed with Bionote Vcheck cPL in dogs with acute pancreatitis and dogs without pancreatitis.
For a dog to be included in the study, an ultrasound examination of the pancreas and an analysis of
cPL had to have been completed within 24 hours of each other. The dogs were divided into two
groups (dogs with acute pancreatitis/dogs without pancreatitis) based on the results from the
ultrasound examinations. Furthermore, information about signalment, medical history, clinical
findings as well as levels of C-reactive protein was retrieved. Measurements of cPL were performed
with Vcheck cPL, an immunological canine-specific method.
Results showed significantly higher cPL-values for dogs with acute pancreatitis compared to
dogs without pancreatitis, but since a clear overlap of cPL-results was seen between the two groups
the test should not be the only tool used when attempting to diagnose pancreatitis.
