Abstract

Trade in agricultural products is deregulated to a greater extent, which contributes to the fact that it is important for farmers to become aware of the economic tools available to secure the prices of their businesses. The risk of consumers and producers increases when prices rise or fall for different agricultural products. This essay will specifically address the economic tool grain futures. Common in grain futures are contracts of autumn wheat and rapeseed. The trade takes place both within speculation of price and also of the actual product that is produced. Despite this tool, only a few farmers use it. Of 16,000 full-time farmers, the tool is only used by about a hundred farmers in Sweden.

The purpose of the study is to understand the factors that form the basis for decisions regarding the use of futures trading by farmers, based on a qualitative case study of two farmers in Sweden. The theoretical choices that have been applied to the study are decision-making theory and Theory of planned behavior.

The study was based on a qualitatively oriented method with two farmers in the case study, who were interviewed about their experiences and opinions about grain futures. The interviews were semi-structured and created a deeper understanding of the individual farmers' behavior and decisions against futures trading.
The results section presents the data collected from the interviews. This was then compiled and presented with relevance and interest to the study. In the analysis and discussion chapter, the theories are linked to the empirical data in order to reach a conclusion against the research questions. The conclusion we came to is that the expected advantage for a farmer who uses futures trading is that profitability in the company is positively affected. In order for this effect to be achieved, the farmer must have good knowledge and a good flow of information about the outside world.
