Abstract

Sen slutet på 1900-talet har trädgårdsidealen förändrats och anpassats efter det moderna samhället. Samtidigt som våra städer står inför utmaningar på grund av förtätning, minskande urbana grönytor och klimatförändringar ökar användandet av hårdgjorda material i de privata villaträdgårdarna. Utbredningen av de hårdgjorda ytorna kan leda till översvämningar, svårigheter med temperaturreglering och utsatta ekosystem i våra tätorter. Syftet med den här studien är att ta reda på vilka faktorer som styr villaägares val av ytor i trädgården samt belysa utmaningarna att påverka utbredningen av de hårdgjorda ytorna i privata villaträdgårdar.
Studien bygger dels på en enkätstudie, dels en litteraturstudie. I en digital enkät fick två privata villaägare med delar av sin trädgård hårdgjord, besvara frågor. Frågorna handlade om deras idéer i samband med trädgårdens gestaltning, samt deras relation till trädgård och trädgårdsarbete. Resultatet av enkätstudien visade att informanterna resonerade olika, men det fanns en enighet kring trädgårdens huvudsakliga funktion, trädgården ska vara praktisk och lättskött. Litteraturstudien visar att det finns få lagar som reglerar personlig trädgårdsgestaltning, stora hårdgjorda ytor kan därför anläggas utan vidare rättsliga påföljder. Äganderätten bidrar till den gråzon – det privat/offentliga dilemmat, som existerar mellan villaägaren och offentliga beslutsfattare, vilket innebär svårigheter för den ena parten att nå och påverka den andra. Offentliga beslutsfattare har därför svårt att påverka hårdgörandet av villaträdgårdar på egen hand. För att kunna hantera ett sådant komplext problem krävs det att de delaktiga parterna förstår varandras behov och involveras i ett gemensamt samarbete. Gråzonen behöver bryggas över och först då kan privata villaägare och offentliga beslutsfattare tillsammans påverka den hårdgjorda trenden.

Since the late 20th century there has been a change in garden design. As our cities face increased densification, a rapid reduction of urban green spaces and climate change, there is also an increased usage of permeable materials in domestic gardens.
An increase of impermeable surfaces could lead to flooding, difficulties to regulate temperature within the cities and threatened ecosystems. This study addresses the increasing permeability change in domestic gardens. The purpose of this study is to unfold what factors determine the way homeowners design specific areas in their gardens. As well to illustrate the existing challenges to affect the expansion of permeable surfaces in these domestic gardens.
A digital survey and a literature study regarding impermeable surfaces in domestic gardens were made for this study. Through the digital survey, two private homeowners with impermeable cover in their gardens, were asked about their vision of design that had led to such a drastic change. As well as their personal relationship to their private garden and gardening. The result from the survey showed that the informants reasoned differently but were unanimous when asked about the main function of the garden. The garden should be practical and easy to manage. The literature study shows that there is few laws and regulations on private garden design, which allows homeowners to pave over their garden and change the permeability freely without further legal sanctions. The private ownership contributes to the grey area – the private/public dilemma, between the homeowners and policy makers where the officials have little to say when valuable green spaces are replaced by impermeable surfaces. To be able to manage a problem of such complex nature, the different parties involved must understand one another’s intentions and work together. The grey area must be bridged over and only then can homeowners and policy makers be able to affect the paved garden trend.
