Abstract

Kandidatarbetet har undersökt mellanrummens betydelse i designade landskap för att samla
kunskap om möjligheter i landskapsdesign. Arbetet tar upp olika utformning av mellanrum
och kategoriserar dem för att ge en tydlig grund i hur de kan användas med eftertanke och
syfte. Vidare har olika designelement undersökts och de olika effekterna som de kan skapa
med en genomtänkt design. Arbetet syftar att förstå mellanrummens roll och hur
landskapsdesignern kan använda dem för att utveckla landskapet. Hur olika upplevelser kan
skapas beroende på hur landskapet byggs upp och hur de mer dominerande rummen påverkas
av mellanrummen.
En litteraturstudie undersöker först upplevelsen av landskap, där tid och rörelse kopplas starkt
till upplevelsen och som där med ger en förståelse för mellanrummens roll som stöd till andra
mer dominerande rum. Med hjälp av litteratur av landskapsarkitekter kategoriseras olika typer
av mellanrum. Olika sätt att låta rum mötas undersöks och visar relationen rummen får till
varandra beroende på vilka typer av övergångar som används mellan rummen. Mellan
rummen uppstår då mellanrum som kan bygga upp en stämning som stödjer den tänkta
upplevelsen genom rummen.
Litteraturstudien syftar även att visa hur olika designelement kan användas i mellanrummen
för att ge olika effekt åt olika upplevelser. Designelementen som tas upp i arbetet är form,
gradvist/abrupt, gångar, väggar, steg, detaljer. En beskrivning av varje element för sig har
gjorts och olika effekter litteraturen tar upp om varje element har beskrivits.
Slutligen visas resultatet av analyser från en fallstudie som gjordes i två stora parker i Malmö.
Där undersöktes ett antal mellanrum för att jämföras med litteraturstudien. Fallstudien visar
hur det som tagits upp i litteraturstudien kan se ut i verkligheten och redovisas med hjälp av
skisser och analys i text.

This thesis has examined the significance spaces in between has in designed landscapes to
receive knowledge about possibilities in landscape design. It talks about different ways to
form the spaces in between and categorizes them for an established foundation to be used as
an inspiration with thought and intent. Different design elements have also been examined
with the different effects they might create, through a well thought out design. The thesis aims
to understand these spaces part in the landscape and how the landscaper can use them for the
benefit of the landscape. How different experiences can be created depending on how the
landscape is structured, and how the dominating rooms of landscape are influenced by the
spaces in between.
A literary study investigates the experience of landscape and talks about the strong connection
with movement and time. This gives insight to the role of spaces in between, as support for
the more dominating rooms of landscape. Literature of landscape architects helps to
categorize different types of these particular in between spaces. Different ways to let spaces
meet are brought up and shows the relation then created amongst them. The relation,
dependant on the way the spaces join together. Where they meet the spaces in between
emerge and can create a mood and an atmosphere supporting the intended experience of the
dominating rooms and the travel through the landscape.
The literary study also aims to examine how different experiences can be created by using
different design elements to shape the spaces in between with different effects. The design
elements brought up in this thesis are form, gradually/abrupt, paths, walls, steps and details. A
description of each element is written as well as the different effects the literary study has
found.
Lastly the results of analyses from a case study, made in two parks in Malmö, are shown. In
the case study several spaces in between were analysed and compared to the literary study.
The case study presents what the results gathered from the literary study can look like in
reality. These examples are presented through text and sketches.
