Abstract

Postanestetiska komplikationer är något som förkommer hos våra hundar. Listan över potentiella
komplikationer kan göras lång och beroende på vilken åtgärd som utförts kan olika typer av
komplikationer tillstöta.
Syftet med detta kandidatarbete är att få en uppfattning om vilka komplikationer djurägare
upplever postanestetiskt hos sina hundar, samt bidra till en ökad förståelse hos djurhälsopersonalen
om hur djurägare kan uppleva kommunikationen när en komplikation uppstått. I studien undersöktes
även hur information gällande postanestetiska komplikationer förmedlas till djurägare. Arbetets
syfte undersöktes dels genom en litteraturstudie, dels genom en enkätundersökning.
Enkätundersökningen riktade sig till djurägare vars hund hade blivit sederad eller sövd och frågorna
fokuserade huvudsakligen på djurägarens upplevelser.
Resultatet för vilka komplikationer som djurägare upplever kan inte generaliseras till hela
hundpopulationen då ett bekvämlighetsurval skett och enkäten som utformades endast delades på
sociala medier. Utöver det stod två rasgrupper för majoriteten av de hundar som ingick i studien.
Det framkom att komplikationer upplevda av djurägare var samma som observerats i tidigare
studier. Hur informationen förmedlats till djurägare om komplikationer som kan uppstå samt tecken
att uppmärksamma i hemmet varierade kraftigt bland de svarande. Ett samband kunde observeras
utifrån enkätstudien mellan de som uppgav att de inte fått någon information om tecken att
uppmärksamma efter hemgång och om de angett att en komplikation uppstått.
Utifrån enkätstudien verkar de flesta svarande nöjda med informationen och hjälpen de fått från
djursjukhuset eller kliniken. Det uppdagades att de som var mest nöjda med informationen, hade
erhållit den både muntligt och skriftligt. Fler studier inom ämnet vore av intresse för att få en
förståelse för hur kommunikationen mellan djurägare och djurhälsopersonal kan hanteras på bästa
sätt. Då denna studie enbart undersökte korttidskomplikationer vore det av intresse med ytterligare
studier om vilka långtidskomplikationer som kan uppmärksammas hos hund efter hemgång.

Complications is something that our dogs can experience post-anestheticly. The list of potential
complications is long and depending on the medical treatment, different complications can occur.
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to investigate which complications dog owners experience
post-anesthetically. This thesis also strives to deepen the understanding of how dog owners
experience the communication with animal health personnel when complications occur. It was
further analyzed how information regarding post-anesthetic complications was communicated to the
owners. This was examined partly through a literature study and partly by a questionnaire survey.
The survey was addressed to pet owners whose dog had been sedated or anesthetized and the
questions focused on the pet owner's experiences.
The findings regarding which complications dog owners experience cannot be applied to the
entire dog population since a convenience sampling was made and the survey was distributed on
social media. In addition, the majority of the respondents belonged to only two groups of dog breeds.
However, complications experienced by the owners were similar to those observed in previous
studies. How information was presented to the owners about complications that may occur as well
as signs to pay attention to at home, varied greatly among the respondents. An association was
shown which indicate that those who did not receive any information were more likely to state that
a complication had occurred.
The study indicates that, most respondents seemed satisfied with the information and help that
they received. Also, it was discovered in the survey that the dog owners who were most satisfied
with the information, received it both verbally and in writing. More studies of the subject would be
of interest in order to gain an understanding of how communication between animal owners and
animal health personnel can be performed. As this study only focus on short-term complications,
further studies about long-term complications would also be of interest.
