Abstract

En legitimerad djursjukskötare i Sverige som besitter reell och formell kompetens får utföra arbetsuppgifter självständigt och bär själv ansvaret för hur denne fullgör momenten. För att bli legitimerad som djursjukskötare behöver denne ha genomgått och blivit godkänd på Djursjukskötarprogrammets bachelorutbildning (180 högskolepoäng) på Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (SLU) i Uppsala och därefter ansöka om legitimation hos Jordbruksverket. Den här processen ser inte likadan ut internationellt och det här kandidatarbetet kommer därför att jämföra internationella länders bachelorutbildningar och efterfrågan av vidareutbildning på masternivå samt presentera likheter och skillnader i djursjukskötarens arbetsuppgifter inom anestesi.

Studien utfördes via mailkonversationer med myndigheter, universitet och colleges i februarimars, 2021, med nio engelsktalande länder (USA, Kanada, Storbritannien, Australien, Nya Zeeland, Sydafrika, Danmark, Norge och Sverige). Frågor som besvarades handlade om landets/universitetets utbildning, anestesikurs, masterprogram och djursjukskötarens titel efter examen. Det genomfördes även en enkätstudie som skickades ut till djursjukhus och veterinärkliniker i de olika länderna. Med en respons på 203 svar, kunde 37 svar användas i kandidatarbetet. Enkätens kärnämnen handlade bland annat om djursjukskötarens arbetsuppgifter inom anestesi samt omfattning av djursjukskötare och anestesiologer på anestesiavdelningen.

Majoriteten som svarade på enkäten hade ingen bachelorutbildning. Begränsade jämförelser kunde utgöras där resultatet av arbetsuppgifterna inom anestesi var likvärdiga mellan de olika länderna. Det som skiljde djursjukskötarens arbetsuppgifter åt var suturering, kastrationer av katt och avlivning (där USA, Storbritannien och Norge inte fick lov att utföra dessa moment). Arbetsuppgifter såsom preoxygenering och särskilda åtgärder till den geriatriska patienten kunde skiljas åt vid jämförelse av den perioperativa omvårdnaden i anestesi (Sydafrika utförde inte dessa moment). Även om många djursjukhus och kliniker hade anestesiologer på anestesiavdelningen, ingick induktion och underhåll av anestesi i djursjukskötarens arbetsuppgifter. Det fanns ett stort intresse för vidareutbildningar och mastersprogram bland djursjukskötarna.

Djursjukskötarens titel fanns i många olika variationer. Även utbildningarnas längd, struktur och poäng varierade kraftigt. Skillnaderna på universiteten i de olika länderna gjorde det svårt att jämföra dem. Fler undersökningar och studier behövs för vidare diskussioner och slutsatser. Många länder har dock några mål gemensamt, att unifiera djursjukskötarens titel, utbildning, ansvar och arbetsuppgifter så att dem blir likvärdiga i alla länder.

A licensed veterinary nurse in Sweden who possesses certified and formal competence may perform tasks independently and without delegation. To achieve a Degree of Bachelor in Science in Veterinary Nursing, the student must complete the course requirements of 180 credits at the Veterinary Nursing program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. The veterinary nurse can thereafter apply for a degree certificate upon request at the Swedish Board of Agriculture. This process differs internationally and for that reason, this bachelor thesis will compare the international countries' bachelor programs and the demand for master's programs. In addition, the thesis will present similarities and differences in the scope of practice in anesthesia for veterinary nurses.

The study was conducted via mail conversation with authorities, universities and colleges in February-March, 2021, with nine English speaking countries (USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Denmark, Norway and Sweden). Questions that were asked were about the country's / university's education, anesthesia course, master's program and the title of profession after graduation. A questionnaire study was also conducted to animal hospitals and veterinary clinics. With 203 responses collected, 37 responses could be credited to the result of the thesis. The core topics of the survey were among other things, the scope of practice within anesthesia and the quantity of veterinary nurses and anaesthesiologists within the same department.

The majority who responded to the survey had no bachelor's degree. Despite the limited amount of comparisons made, the results of the tasks in anesthesia were equivalent between the different countries. What separated the veterinary nurses tasks were suturing, castrations of cats and euthanization (USA, Great Britain and Norway were not allowed to perform these tasks). Preoxygenation and special measures for the geriatric patient could be distinguished when comparing the perioperative care within anesthesia (South Africa did not perform these tasks). Many animal hospitals and veterinary clinics had anesthesiologists in the department of anesthesia, however, it was the veterinary nurses responsibility to induce and maintain anesthesia. There was a great deal of interest and demand among veterinary nurses for further education and master's programs.

The veterinary nurse title varies. The length, structure and credits of the education also varied greatly. The differences between the universities in the different countries made it difficult to compare them. More research and studies are needed for further discussions and conclusions. However, many countries have the same goals in common which are to unify the veterinary nurse title, education, responsibilities and duties so that they become equal in all countries.
