Abstract

The snow leopard is an endangered species, held in captivity for conservation and information purposes. There are several diseases impinging on the survival and welfare of individuals affected. A disease of such type is Multiple Ocular Coloboma (MOC) syndrome, of which an increase in occurrence has been observed lately. The aim of the study was to investigate the diseases that exist in the captive snow leopard population and the consequences they result in. For the implementation of the study, snow leopard information was gathered from 31 European zoos.

The most frequently reported diagnoses in the population were endoparasitic infections, such as Toxocara spp. and Toxascaris spp., traumatic wounds, and pulmonary and kidney disease.

The most commonly reported cause of death for the adult as well as the juvenile snow leopards was euthanasia. The reason for euthanasia was however not the same for the two groups. Snow leopards that died before reaching the age of one year were mainly euthanised because of congenital eye anomalies, such as MOC. The study suggests that more information about MOC can be of great importance to ensure good welfare and survival in future generations.
