Abstract

Försökshästarna delades in i en

BioWorma® is a commercially available feed supplement that contains spores from the nematodetrapping microfungus Duddingtonia flagrans. It is described as a biological form of parasite control
and could be used as a complement to deworming, an existing need as the development of resistance
among the small strongyles of the horse is an increasing problem. D. flagrans has shown promising
results in several studies in different animal species, and can reduce the number of infectious larvae
from parasitic nematodes (such as the strongyles of the horse) on pasture by producing an adhesive
net in the faeces that trap nematodes. The purpose of the study is to investigate BioWorma®'s effectiveness in preventing the migration of equine strongylid nematode larvae to the pasture and to
assess its usefulness as a parasite control in Nordic conditions.
The study was carried out in two rounds, one during summer and one in autumn. The horses
included in the study were divided into a control group and a group that received BioWorma® in a
dose of 3 × 104
spores/kg/day for 6 consecutive days in the summer study and a double dose in
autumn. Before and after ingestion of BioWorma®, a culture of the faeces from each horse was
performed in laboratory conditions, and the proportion of migrating larvae per egg was calculated.
Secondly, an experimental infection of a parasite-free pasture was performed by placing three faecal
pats of 1.2 kg from each horse on the pasture. Grass samples were then collected around the faecal
pats once a month and the number of infectious larvae (L3) was calculated (L3/kgDM grass).
Weather data for the study period were obtained from SMHI and compiled. The effect of BioWorma® was assessed by comparing the number of migrating larvae in the control and BioWorma®
group. In autumn, a cultivation was also carried out on an agar dish for D. flagrans from feces and
the feed supplement BioWorma®.
In this study, no effect of BioWorma® could be shown at the recommended dosage. At double
dosage, a significant effect was seen in faecal cultures with a 63.7 % reduction of migrated larvae.
However, no effect was seen in the field trial at double dosage, which may be due to the fact that
Nordic weather conditions in autumn are too cold for sufficient growth of the fungus. It is worth
noting that light microscopic examination of cultures from faeces on agar plates could not detect D.
flagrans.
