Abstract

Det är från tidigare studier känt att hästen inte bara har ett smärtansikte utan också ett så kallat
stressansikte. Stressansiktet kan vara problematiskt ur en smärt bedömningssynpunkt, då hästen befinner sig i en klinisk miljö och upplever emotionell stress. I denna studie undersöks det hur den
emotionella stressen påverkar hur smärtan uttrycks i hästens ansikte. Något som till författarens
bästa minne, inte undersökts tidigare. I studien ingick det 12 hästar som studerades i sin hemmiljö
och som alla genomgick fyra olika interventioner i 15 minuter;
• Kontroll utan något tillfört stimuli.
• Emotionell stress i form av att bli lämnad i isolering.
• Smärta från en blodtrycksmanschett som pumpas till 240 mmHg och orsakar
ischemi.
• Kombinerat försök med smärta och emotionell stress.
Alla interventioner filmades med fyra olika kameror i olika vinklar i hästens egen box. Filmklippen
annoterades med hjälp av programvaran ELAN och EquiFACS. Under alla interventioner samlades
hjärtfrekvensdata in med en elektrod med inbyggd sändare, som placerades över hästens hjärtsiluett.
I jämförelse med kontroll observerades en ökning av ansiktsrörelser i alla interventioner förutom
interventionen med enbart ett smärtsamt stimuli. De olika förändringarna i hästens ansiktsuttryck
visades med deskriptiv statistik och för de utvalda rörelser; AU101, AU145, AU47, AU5,
AUH13,AU18, AD19, AD104, EAD101, EAD104 och AD38 gjordes statistiska tester.
Under interventionen med både tillförd smärta och emotionell stress visade sig främst muskelrörelser i ansiktet som är kopplade till stress som även sågs under interventionen med enbart emotionell
stress var signifikanta. Testerna visar att den emotionella stressen har en betydande effekt på hästen
smärtansikte och de är något som behöver tas i beaktande för att få en riktig smärtbedömning på
stressade hästar. Intressanta aspekter som inte innefattas av detta arbete föreslås, som fortsatta studier och studier på en större population.

It is known from previous studies that the horse not only has a pain face but also a so-called stress
face. The stress face can be problematic from an assessment point of view, as the horse is in a clinical
environment and experiences emotional stress. This study examines how emotional stress affects
how pain is expressed in the horse's face. Something that, in the author's best memory, has not been
investigated before. The study included 12 horses in their home environment who all underwent
four different interventions for 15 minutes;
• Control without any added stimuli.
• Emotional stress in the form of being left in isolation.
• Pain from a blood pressure cuff that is pumped to 240 mmHg and causes ischemia.
• Combined experience with pain and emotional stress.
All interventions were filmed with four different cameras at different angles in the horse's own box.
The film clips were annotated using the ELAN and EquiFACS software. During all interventions,
heart rate data were collected with an electrode with a built-in transmitter, which was placed over
the horse's heart silhouette.
In comparison with control, an increase in facial movements was observed in all interventions except
the intervention with only a painful stimulus. The various changes in the horse's facial expression
were shown with descriptive statistics and for the selected movements; AU101, AU145, AU47,
AU5, AUH13, AU18, AD19, AD104, EAD101, EAD104 and AD38 performed statistical tests.
During the intervention with both added pain and emotional stress, mainly muscle movements in
the face that are linked to stress of the type mentioned proved to be significant. The same significant
codes were seen during the intervention with only emotional stress. The tests show that the emotional stress has a significant effect on the horse's pain face and they are something that needs to be
taken into account to get a proper pain assessment on the horse. Interesting aspects that are not
included in this work are suggested, such as further studies and studies on a larger population.
