Abstract

Detta examensarbete tar avstamp i gestaltningsfilosofin Sparsamhetens estetik av landskapsarkitekten Catherine Dee (2012), med syftet att undersöka hur denna kan bidra till kunskapen om hållbar gestaltning. Målet med arbetet är att producera ett gestaltningsförslag av Neptunigången i Malmö, som kan visa på ett tillvägagångssätt för hur Sparsamhetens estetik kan uttrycka sig i ett praktiskt exempel. Arbetets forskningsfråga har därför varit följande: På vilket sätt kan Sparsamhetens estetik medvetgöra en ökad förståelse kring hållbar gestaltning med Neptunigången som exempel? Arbetet är uppdelat i 4 delar, en litteraturstudie, en platsanalys, ett gestaltningsförslag och en diskussionsdel.

Litteraturstudien presenterar arbetets utgångspunkter, som utgörs av den begreppsapparat som Sparsamhetens estetik
innehåller. Litteraturstudien innefattar även en genomgång av olika byggnadsmaterial, med utgångspunkt i framförallt
deras hållbarhet, beständighet och estetiska kvaliteter, som stöd för gestaltningsprocessen. Platsanalysen redogör Neptunigångens fysiska, dynamiska och immateriella uppbyggnad samt hur denna nyttjas och påverkas av sin omgivning. Detta ligger sedan till grund för Neptunigångens gestaltningsförslag tillsammans med litteraturstudien.

Gestaltningsförslaget presenterar en utformning av Neptunigången som tar fasta på platsens befintliga karaktärsmiljöer samt former i olika skalor och materialiteter. Neptunigångens långa historia som behandlas med ödmjukhet, där nya sätt att uppleva denna miljö uppstår. En parkstruktur skapas även i Neptunigångens senare bebyggelsestrukturer, där parkens innehåll är inspirerat av former, materialiteter och vegetation från platsen. Diskussionsdelen syftar till att besvara arbetets syfte och forskningsfråga genom att sammanfatta de reflektioner som uppkommit under gestaltningsprocessen i relation till Sparsamhetens estetik.

This thesis is based on the design philosophy the aesthetics of thrift by landscape architect Catherine Dee (2012), with the aim of exploring how this can contribute to the knowledge of sustainable design. The aim of the work is to produce a design proposal for Neptunigången in Malmö, which can show an approach to how the aesthetics of thrift can be expressed in a practical example. The research question of the work has therefore been the following: How can the aesthetics of thrift promote an increased understanding of sustainable design with Neptunigången as an example? The work is divided into 4 parts, a literature study, a site analysis, a design proposal and a discussion part.

The literature study presents the starting points of the work, which consists of the conceptual apparatus that the aesthetics of thrift contains. The literature study also includes a review of various building materials, based primarily on their sustainability, durability and aesthetic qualities, as support for the design process. The site analysis describes the physical, dynamic and intangible structure of Neptunigången and how it is used and affected by its surroundings. This then forms the basis for Neptunigångens design proposal together with the literature study.

The design proposal presents a design of Neptunigången that emphasizes existing environments as well as forms in
different scales and materialities. Neptunigången´s long history as a railroad area and unique vegetation is treated with humility, where new ways of experiencing this environment arise. A park structure is also created in Neptunigången’s later building structures, where the park’s content is inspired by forms, materials and vegetation from the site. The discussion part answers the aim and research question of the work by summarizing the reflections that have arisen during the design process in relation to the aesthetics of thrift.
