Abstract

I uppsatsen undersöks på ett explorativt sätt hur landskap representeras i arkitektmodeller.
Trots att landskaps ofta återges som modeller, som huvudobjekt eller kontextgivande omgivning, saknas det idag teori kring just landskapet som arkitektmodell. Därför använde jag i den här uppsatsen teori som från början rör byggnadsarkitektur från Albert C Smiths bok The Architectural Model as Machine och Mark Morris bok Architecture and the Miniature. Genom en explorativ metod besvaras först frågan på varför modeller är ett användbart verktyg för arkitekter sedan har flera modeller studerats och fotograferats för att kontextualisera en diskussion om hur olika element och egenskaper i landskapet återges i modeller. I samtal med modellbyggaren Mårten Ubbe samt konstnären och läraren Peter Dacke har perspektivet på modeller breddats. I slutsatsen konstateras det att klassiska material som trä och papper fortfarande har många fördelar som modellmaterial trots modern teknologi. Det läggs också fram att modeller inte används lika brett i landskaps- som byggnadsarkitektur. Utifrån det läggs en teori fram om att landskapsarkitekturen är fast i normer som inte gynnar design av landskap i modeller och därför borde landskapsarkitekter med hjälp av konstnärliga metoder upptäcka nya sätt att representera landskapet i modell.

In this paper it is investigated how landscapes are represented in architectural models. As not much is written specifically on landscape models a theoretical framework from building architecture have been used, provided by Albert C Smiths’ book The Architectural Model as Machine and Mark Morris’s book Architecture and the Miniature. In the results part first the question of why models are a useful tool to architects are answered and then different models of landscapes have been studied and photographed. They are then presented to contextualise a discussion about how different features and elements of the landscape are presented in models. In conversations with model maker Mårten Ubbe and artist and teacher Peter Dacke the perspective on models are expanded. It’s concluded that the use of classical materials such as wood and paper still have many benefits despite modern technologies. It is also put forward that models are not as widely used in landscape architecture as in building architecture. The case is made for landscape architecture being stuck in norms that does not benefit the design of landscape in models and landscape architects should therefor with the use of artistic methods discover new ways of representing landscape in models.
