Abstract

Vi människor har haft stor nytta av det verbala språket för att förstå varandra och utvecklas som art. Eftersom det talade språket fått så stor betydelse för oss verkar vi ha tappat en del av förmågan att läsa andra former av ickeverbal kommunikation såsom doft- och kroppsspråk, något som ickemänskliga djur däremot förstår väl.

Katter är tillsammans med hundar de djur som lever närmast människor, och katter har till och med gått om hundarna i antal. Trots att vi inte har ett gemensamt språk har katter och människor ändå utvecklat olika sätt att kommunicera med varandra. Det är dessa kommunikationssätt som det här arbetet inriktat sig på.

Forskningen konstaterar att katter är sociala med en rad olika artspecifika signaler för intrapecifik kommunikation
som även, med vissa modifieringar, används för kommunikation med andra arter, exempelvis människan. I litteraturstudien redovisas kattens förutsättningar att uppleva omvärlden samt hur människa och katt påverkar och förstår varandra. Genom att få en ökad förståelse för kattens sinnen, beteenden och behov samt båda arters (katters och människors) begränsningar och möjligheter att kommunicera, så kan vi även skapa en gemensam bättre välfärd när vi lever tillsammans.

En av de två avslutande studierna provade om katter kan lära sig våra ord på föremål och använda dem som
ledtrådar. Resultatet visade att katterna inte lyckades lära sig de två orden och/eller använda dem som ledtrådar.
Den andra studien i detta arbete bekräftar tidigare forskning som visar att katter som tidigt socialiserats till människor kan använda människors pekgester som ledtrådar. I samband med de två försöken kunde man även se andra förmågor som att räkna, ha personliga strategier och att vara lateral. Det blev också tydligt att katter favoriserar vissa sinnen framför andra (exempelvis syn framför doft) och att den tidiga socialiseringen är viktig för att förstå mänsklig kommunikation.

Humans have benefited greatly from the verbal language in order to understand each other and develop as a
species. Since the spoken language has become so important to us, we seem to have lost some of the ability
to read other forms of nonverbal communication such as scent and body language, something nonhuman
animals understand well on the other hand.

Cats and dogs are among all animals the ones that live closest to humans, and now there are more cats than
dogs that live as companions to people. Although we do not have a common language, cats and people have
developed different ways of communicating with each other. It is these modes of communication that this
work focuses on.

Research concludes that cats are social with a variety of species-specific signals for intrapecific communication which also, with some modifications, are used for communication with other species, such as humans.
In the literature study, the cat’s conditions for experiencing the outside world are presented, as well as how humans and cats affect and understand each other. By gaining an increased understanding of the cat’s senses,
behaviour and needs, as well as the limitations and possibilities to communicate in both species (cats and
humans), then we can create a mutual better welfare when we are living together.

One of the two final studies tried if cats can learn our words for objects and use them as clues.The result showed that the cats failed to learn the two words and/or use them as clues. The second study in this work confirms previous research that shows that cats who were early socialized to humans can use people’s gestures
as clues. In connection with the two studies, one could also see other abilities such as counting, having personal strategies and being lateral. It also became clear that cats favor some senses before others (for example,
vision before scent) and that early socialization is important for understanding human communication.
