Abstract

Studiens syfte har varit att undersöka hur några djurproducenter resonerar och agerar både på kort och lång sikt angående ett förändrat klimat, och ta reda vilka åtgärder man har vidtagit eller kommer att vidta. Vidare få höra deras egna tankar kring vad de tror kommer att bli deras utmaningar i ett framtida klimat och om de upplever att klimatet har förändrats över tid där de odlar.
Litteraturstudien belyser hur det framtida klimatet väntas bli och hur klimatförändringarna skulle kunna påverka lantbrukare med djurproduktion. Längre perioder med torka och regn men även längre vegetationsperioder väntas. Lantbrukarna måste lära sig att hantera och försöka förebygga foderbrist, men även nya möjligheter uppstår i ett förändrat klimat som till exempel möjligheten att odla nya grödor. Ett förändrat klimat kan även innebära att man i vissa fall behöver investera i till exempel bevattning. Dessutom kan risken för värmestress påverka djuren och lantbrukarna måste tillhandahålla åtgärder som ökad ventilation, skugga eller duschning för att förhindra negativa konsekvenser.
Fem djuruppfödare intervjuades med ett semi-strukturerat format. Lantbrukarna bedrev produktion inom antingen lamm-, nötkött- eller mjölkproduktion. Gårdarna var belägna i Blekinge, Öland samt Gotland i sydöstra Sverige. Lantbrukarna upplever något längre perioder med ett väderslag än tidigare. Det är främst torr-perioder som är ett återkommande problem som lantbrukarna hanterar och vidtar åtgärder mot. Lantbrukarna berättade hur de förberedde sig och försökte förhindra foderbrist och värmestress hos sina djur. Bevattning var också ett alternativ som implementerades av ett par lantbrukare. Slutsatsen är att klimatförändringarna påverkar oss mycket redan nu men att det inte bara är av ondo, utan att det även för med sig möjligheter som kan gynna ens produktion.

The aim of the study was to investigate how some livestock farmers think and act in the short and long term regarding how climate change affects their farming. The study included what measures have they taken or what they will do in the future. Additionally, their thoughts about the challenges in a future climate and if they think that the climate has changed over time where they live was included.

In the literature review, the predictions of future climate are described and its implications for livestock production. Longer drought periods as well as more rain and longer growing seasons are expected. Farmers have to address the risks of feed shortages but also new opportunities arise, as new crops can be part of the cultivation plan but also other measures as investing in watering capacity. Additionally, the risk of heat stress can affect animals and farmers have to provide measures as increased ventilation, shade or regular shower to prevent negative consequences.

Five livestock farmers were interviewed using a semi-structured format. The farmers had production in either lamb, beef or milk production. The farms were situated in the south-east Swedish regions of Blekinge, Öland and Gotland. The farmers experience slightly longer periods of certain weather situations than before. Droughts are perceived as a recurring problem that farmers have to deal with and act on. Farmers told about how they prepared and tried to prevent feed shortages and heat stress of their animals. Irrigation was also an option implemented by a couple of farmers. In conclusion, farmers are already affected by climate change, but they also put forward that there are opportunities, which can benefit production.
