Abstract

A problem in Sweden is to obtain a satisfactory regrowth through natural regeneration of pine. Fertilization and release cutting have shown to significantly increase pine cone and seed production, while gaps in the existing forest stand provide the microclimate that increases survival and growth. Gap cutting is a form of continuous forest cover management - a method that is based on circular gaps of 20 – 50 meters that are removed in the forest stand and the forest edge of the gap that account for the regrowth. The gaps are expanded at intervals of 5 – 15 years until they join together. The purpose of this study is to analyse the competition for water, nutrition, and light of the regeneration in a circular gap of 20 meters in diameter. Also, answering the questions about what impact fertilization and stump removal had, as well as, the difference between north and south in the gap due to sunlight. The study was done in Jädraås experimental park, where 160 gaps were created in 1999 and centre trees were released. In 2003, the centre trees were felled and the stumps were removed and fertilized. In the spring of 2020, 40 gaps were inventoried of which: 20 gaps were fertilized and 20 gaps had the stumps removed. The result of the inventory shows that gaps with stump removal of the centre tree give 36 percent more plants than gaps where the centre trees have been felled. No significant differences can be seen in the competition between edge of the stand and center, nor between the north and the south except with non-fertilized felled gaps, where a significant difference shows more pine plants in the south. The non-fertilized gaps show more pine plants per hectare than the fertilized gaps.
