Abstract

Tidigare forskning har visat att vi behöver veta mer om kattägare och deras inverkan på relationen
mellan katt och människa. Denna studie har utgått från en anonym enkätundersökning som
skickades ut i Ovanåkers kommun i Sverige för att undersöka kattägarskapet med avseende på
kattägarens katter, tidigare erfarenheter och förhållningssätt till katter. Studien har även syftat till att
ta reda på hur kattägare resonerar kring katters beteende och behov. Totalt 261 kattägare har fullföljt
enkäten som bestod av 34 frågor. Baserat på resultaten verkar kattägare uppskatta kattägarskapet
och har till stor del levt med katter under större delen av sin barndom och även upplevt en positiv
barndomsrelationen till katter. Däremot kan det finnas kunskapsluckor kring lagstiftningen om
huruvida katter får lämnas ensamma ett helt dygn utan tillsyn. Resultatet visade även att kattägare,
när katten uppvisar problembeteenden, främst skulle agera genom att anpassa miljön för att
förhindra att det sker igen eller tydligt visa för katten att beteendet är oacceptabelt. Nästan ingen
skulle agera genom att söka hjälp hos en etolog vilket kan grundas i att det är ett begrepp som
kattägare i kommunen inte är bekanta med eller en resurs de inte har tillgång till. Åtgärder skulle
kunna utformas för att göra kattägare mer bekanta med termen etologer och även uppmärksamma
lagstiftningen för att förbättra hållningen av katter och därmed förebygga att relationen brister.

Previous research has shown that it is necessary to have a better understanding of cat owners and
their impact on the cat-human relationship. This study is based on an anonymous survey that was
sent out in the county of Ovanåker in Sweden to investigate the cat ownership with regards of cat
owners’ cats, past experiences and attitude to cats. The study also aimed to find out how cat owners’
reason about cats’ behavior and needs. A total of 261 cat owners completed the survey which
consisted of 34 questions. Based on the results, cat owners seem to appreciate the cat ownership and
have mainly lived with cats for most of their childhood and experienced a positive childhood
relationship with cats. However, there may exist knowledge gaps about the legislation whether cats
may be left alone for a full day without supervision. The result also showed that, in case of problem
behavior situations, cat owners would primarily act by adapting the environment to prevent it from
happening again or distinctly show the cat that the behavior is unacceptable. Almost no one would
act out by seeking help from an ethologist, which may be caused by the fact that it is an unfamiliar
term to the cat owners within the county or a resource they don’t have access to. Measures could be
designed to make cat owners more familiar with the term ethologists and make the legislation more
visible to improve the husbandry of cats and thereby prevent the relationship from failing.
