Abstract

Ryggsmärta är vanligt förekommande hos hästar och ett flertal rehabiliteringsmetoder kan
användas vid behandling av ryggsmärta. Hästarna rehabiliteras inte enbart av veterinärer utan olika
yrkeskategorier arbetar med rehabilitering av häst.
Syftet med denna kandidatuppsats var att göra en deskriptiv studie av vilka
rehabiliteringsmetoder som användes av legitimerade veterinärer, legitimerade fysioterapeuter och
equiterapeuter vid behandling av hästar med ospecificerad ryggsmärta i Sverige. Syftet var även
att belysa samarbetet mellan yrkeskategorierna.
En litteraturstudie syftade till en genomgång av litteratur kring ryggsmärta hos hästar, vilka
rehabiliteringsmetoder som användes och samarbetet mellan veterinärer och andra yrkeskategorier
vid rehabilitering. En enkätstudie genomfördes med syfte att undersöka vilka
rehabiliteringsmetoder som användes på svenska hästar vid ospecificerad ryggsmärta samt hur
veterinärer, fysioterapeuter och equiterapeuter samarbetade kring hästens rehabilitering. Enkäten
distribuerades via e-post till totalt 53 respondenter och den slutfördes av 42 respondenter.
Fördelningen av respondenterna som påbörjade enkäten var 22 legitimerade veterinärer, nio
legitimerade fysioterapeuter (varav sju godkända av Jordbruksverket) och 22 equiterapeuter.
I enkätstudiens resultat framkom att veterinärer och fysioterapeuter i hög grad valde att
använda sig av terapeutisk träning vid ospecificerad ryggsmärta medan equiterapeuter föredrog
kiropraktik och akupunktur. Ett ytterligare resultat från enkätstudien var att merparten av
respondenterna samarbetade med de andra yrkeskategorierna.
Kandidatuppsatsen kan ligga till grund för vidare studier kring vilka rehabiliteringsmetoder
som används vid ospecificerad ryggsmärta hos häst och samarbetet mellan olika yrkesgrupper
inom hästsjukvården.

Back pain is common in horses and a variety of rehabilitation methods can be used. Horses are
rehabilitated not only by veterinarians but by various professional groups working with horse
rehabilitation.
The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to make a descriptive study of the rehabilitation
methods used by veterinarians, physiotherapists and equine therapists in the treatment of
unidentified back pain on horses in Sweden. The purpose was also to highlight the cooperation
between the professional categories.
A literature study aimed at a review of the literature on back pain in horses, the rehabilitation
methods used and collaboration between veterinarians and other professions in rehabilitation. The
emphasis of the work was on the survey study that was conducted to give a picture of the
rehabilitation methods used on Swedish horses with back pain and how veterinarians,
physiotherapists and equine therapists work together with the horse's rehabilitation. The
questionnaire was distributed via e-mail to a total of 53 respondents and it was completed by 42 respondents. There were 22 veterinarians, nine physiotherapists (seven of whom were approved by
the Swedish Board of Agriculture) and 22 equine therapists who started the survey.
The result of the survey showed that veterinarians and physiotherapists mainly chose to use
therapeutic training in back pain while equine therapists preferred chiropractic and acupuncture.
Another result from the survey was that most of the respondents collaborate with the other
professions.
The bachelor thesis may be basis for further studies on the rehabilitation methods used in
unidentified back pain in horses.
