Abstract

I denna studie undersöktes två olika
Under studien bedömdes även

The most common disease in dogs is periodontitis where 44 - 100 % of the population is affected.
The first step towards periodontitis is plaque formation on the teeth. Plaque is made up of bacteria
and can cause gingivitis. Unless the plaque is removed from the tooth surface, it is gradually
converted to calculus. Plaque along with the body's immune system causes inflammation that can
dissolve the tooth's supporting tissues and lead to tooth loss.
One known and effective way to remove plaque from the teeth is tooth brushing. Many people find
it difficult to brush their dog's teeth with a toothbrush. There are other options on the market that are
not scientifically tested. In this study, two different textile products designed for dental cleaning
were examined a glove made of nylon and a microfiber fingerstall. The products were evaluated for
efficacy against gingivitis, plaque and calculus. During the trial, stress levels were also assessed
according to Fear, Anxiety and Stress scale (FAS) to see if the stress level associated with dental
cleaning decreased with daily use of the two products. In this experimental study, 18 training dogs
from the Swedish University of Agriculture (SLU) were used. Seven of these dogs were control
group and 11 were treated with dental cleaning for 35 days. The buccal side of the teeth was cleaned
once daily with both products on all dogs. On half of the dogs, the glove was used on the right side
and the fingerstall on the left side of the mouth and the method were reversed on the rest.
A blinded veterinarian who is a PhD student in dog and cat dentistry made two assessments of all
dogs without sedation or anesthesia. An assessment was carried out before dental cleaning was
started and an additional assessment after 35 days. Gingivitis, plaque and calculus were assessed
according to a protocol. On two occasions, the dog's teeth were stained to reveal plaque and to
examine whether or not the products were successful in removing plaque and if they could access
the space between the teeth. Pictures were taken of the dog's teeth at both assessments and staining
occasions.
All dogs had plaque at the first assessment, but at the second assessment none of the dogs who
received dental cleaning had plaque, this was the result for both products. When evaluating the
occurrence of gingivitis, there was a significant improvement after having used both the glove
(p=0.027) and the fingerstall (p=0.008). The result of the staining after analysis of the pictures
showed that everyone had less plaque after tooth cleaning. The decrease in the FAS level was
significant (p<0,005), which indicates that the dogs get used to the treatment.
