Abstract

HLR, som står för hjärt- och lungräddning, är en samling åtgärder med målet att en
individ som drabbats av hjärtstillestånd ska återfå normal blodcirkulation och
andning. För att öka chansen för överlevnad är det viktigt att utförandet av HLR är
av god kvalitet.
Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vad det fanns för aktuella
vetenskapliga rekommendationer för HLR på hund och katt. En kompletterande
enkätstudie genomfördes för att kartlägga HLR-rutiner på några djursjukhus och -
kliniker i Sverige.
Resultatet av litteraturstudien visade att det fanns begränsat med forskning om
HLR på djurslagen hund och katt. De officiella riktlinjer som getts ut baserades på
många studier som gjorts på andra djurslag, till exempel svin, och på människor.
Enkätstudien behandlade frågor om HLR-utbildning, utrustning på arbetsplatsen
samt personalens kännedom om rutiner. Studien mottog 59 slutförda enkätsvar,
samtliga inkluderades. Det förekom stor diskrepans i svaren som inkom från
respondenterna, även de från samma arbetsplats.
Det gjordes sedan en jämförelse mellan litteraturstudie och enkätsvar.
Respondenternas svar visade att arbetsplatserna följde aktuella riktlinjer för HLR i
varierande grad. Fler djursjukhus än djurkliniker svarade att de erbjöd utbildning
samt att de hade tillgång till den utrustning som efterfrågades i enkäten. Av alla
respondenter var det 29 % som inte kände att de besatt tillräckligt med kunskaper
för att kunna hantera ett hjärtstillestånd på hund eller katt. Både litteratur- och
enkätstudien visade behov av mer utbildning och träning av HLR på hund och katt
för anställda inom djursjukvården. Mer forskning på samma djurslag behövs för att
säkerställa optimala riktlinjer för HLR.

CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a set of measures aiming
to return normal circulation and breathing in individuals experiencing cardiac
arrest. To improve the chance of survival the quality of CPR is of the utmost
importance.
The purpose of this study was to identify current research and recommendations
for CPR in dogs and cats. A supplemental survey was conducted to map out the
routines for CPR at some small animal hospitals and clinics in Sweden.
The result of the literature review showed that the existing research was limited
for CPR in dogs and cats. The official guidelines published for small animal CPR
were based on many studies conducted on other animal species and humans.
The survey consisted of questions regarding the education of CPR, the
equipment at the hospitals and clinics as well as the staffs’ knowledge about CPR
routines. All 59 completed forms that the survey received were included in the
study. A lot of discrepancy occurred among the responses, even between employees
from the same workplace.
A comparison was then made between the research and the survey responses.
The workplaces whose staff participated in the survey were seen to follow the
current recommendations for CPR to various degrees. There existed a difference
between the hospitals and the clinics, primarily regarding the frequency of CPR
education and what equipment was present at the workplace. Out of all the
respondents, 29% did not feel they possessed the knowledge needed to handle a
cardiac arrest on a dog or a cat. Both the literature review and the survey exposed
the need for more CPR education and training for employees at animal care
facilities.
Additional studies on dogs and cats need to be conducted to establish the optimal
guidelines for small animal CPR.
