Abstract
,This paper investigates the species diversity amongst shrubs in the central parts of Malmö, Sweden, whilst looking at the differences between this area’s inner and outer parts. Inventory of 400 random sample plots á 100 square meters was taken and percentages of impervious surface, green area and shrubs were determined. 26 different species were found during the inventory period, which was conducted in January and February of 2020. In the inner area 8 species were found which were not present in the outer area. However, the outer area had 9 species which the inner area lacked. 9 species were found in both parts of Malmö. Using the 10-, 20-, 30-rule, the species diversity in Malmö was investigated. According to this rule, there should not be more than 10 % of one species, 20 % of one genus and 30 % of one family of plants in a city. The species Syringa vulgaris and Symphoricarpos x chenaultii both made up more than 10 %, no genus surpassed the 20 % barrier but the Rosaceae family made up more than 30 % of the plant material investigated. 26 different species were found, which makes the species richness fairly low in the investigated areas, and there are some differences in the species composition between the inner and outer areas of central Malmö. In some cases the city of Malmö does not hold up against the 10-, 20-, 30-rule which can result in lowered resilience towards pathogens and pests.
