Abstract

Det pågår en mängd stadsförnyelseprojekt runt om i Europa där visionen beskrivs med begrepp såsom “hållbara”, “blandade” och “produktiva”. Flera av projekten deltar i arkitekturtävlingar för att få in kreativa och innovativa förslag till utveckling. En återkommande arkitekttävling är Europan som i år innefattar 47 tävlingsområden i Europa och går under temat “Productive cities”.
Målet med detta arbete har varit att göra en förstudie av begreppet “produktiva städer” för att sedan tillämpa det i ett gestaltningsförslag i årets Europan. Vi har undersökt begreppets betydelse ur en nutida stadsplaneringskontext och hur landskapsarkitektur kan bidra till “produktiva städer”. Arbetet har genomförts med hjälp av en litteraturstudie, fallstudier och en designstudie för att undersöka begreppet.
Vi har under arbetets gång ifrågasatt och försökt förstå vad en produktiv stad egentligen innebär och hur det skiljer sig från exempelvis begreppet en blandad stad. Vi har inte hittat en tydlig definition av begreppet “produktiva städer” och har därför utifrån vår egen tolkning identifierat de faktorer vi tror att landskapsarkitekter kan använda för att främja städers produktivitet. Faktorer vi fokuserade på i designstudien var exempelvis: avstånd mellan boende och verksamheter, mångfald, medborgardeltagande, flexibla platser och främjande av möten mellan människor.
Designstudien fokuserar på Uddevallas tävlingsområde där vi utformat ett gestaltningsförslag. Målet med gestaltningen har varit att utveckla platsen och undersöka huruvida tillämpningen av begreppet “produktiva städer” kan bidra till att lösa utmaningar som finns i området idag. Förslaget resulterade i en lokal försörjning av vegetation för Uddevalla genom medborgardeltagande och en vidareutveckling av befintliga initiativ på platsen.

There are many active urban renewal projects throughout Europe where the vision is described with terms such as ”sustainable”, ”mixed” and ”productive”. Several of the projects participate in architectural competitions to bring in creative and innovative proposals for development. A recurring architectural competition is Europan, which involves 47 competition sites in Europe this year and carries the theme ”Productive cities”.
The aim of this work has been to conduct a pre study of the concept “productive cities” and then apply it in a design proposal in this year’s Europan. We have investigated the significance of the concept in a contemporary urban planning context and how landscape architecture can contribute to productive cities. The work has been carried out with a literature study, case studies and a design study to investigate the term.
During this work, we have questioned and investigated what a productive city actually means and how it differs from, for example, the concept of a mixed city. We have not found a clear definition of the term “productive cities” and have therefore, based on our own interpretation, identified the factors we believe that landscape architects can use to promote productivity in the cities. Factors we focused on in the design study were, for example: distances between housing and work places, diversity, citizen participation, flexible places and the promotion of meetings between people.
The design study focuses on Uddevalla’s competition site where we have created a design proposal. The aim of the design has been to develop the site and investigate whether application of the concept “productive cities” can play a part in solving the challenges currently present at the site. The proposal resulted in a local supply of vegetation for Uddevalla through citizen participation and a further development of existing initiatives on the site.
