Abstract

För att en mer hållbar och effektiv animalieproduktion ska kunna uppnås behöver avelsarbetet utformas utifrån olika hållbarhetsaspekter. De hållbarhetsaspekter som tas upp i detta arbete är ekonomisk, miljömässig och social hållbarhet. Kopplade till dessa finns det direkta produktionsegenskaper och funktionella egenskaper som formar avelsmålen. För lantbrukaren är en god ekonomi en av de viktigaste aspekterna men för många konsumenter är det viktigt att produktionen bygger på livsmedelssäkerhet och djurvälfärd. Globalt sett är miljöpåverkan och lokalt anpassade djur två viktiga förutsättningar i framtiden. Att definiera vilka värden som utmärker hållbarhet är svårt då de olika hållbarhetsaspekterna ofta påverkar varandra. Att rangordna vilken hållbarhetsaspekt som är viktigast är också svårt. Egenskaperna värderas olika beroende på bakgrund och kunskapsnivå hos den som utformar avelsmålet. För att en hållbar produktion ska uppnås måste alla aspekter granskas och värderas på ett liknande sätt. Att avla för hållbar produktion kräver stor kunskap och eftertanke för att ingen viktig egenskap ska försvinna och den genetiska mångfalden behållas.

In order to achieve sustainable and more efficient livestock production, the breeding work must be designed with respect to different sustainability aspects. The sustainability aspects that are important are economic, environmental and social sustainability. Within these, there are direct production traits and functional traits that should form the basis for how the breeding objectives should be designed. For the farmer, a good economy is one of the most important aspects, while for many consumers production based on food safety and animal welfare are of high importance. Globally, the environmental impact and local adapted animals are important in the future. Defining which values symbolizes sustainability is difficult, since there are many different aspects of sustainability which also often affect each other. It is also difficult to rank which one of the sustainability aspects that is the most important. The traits are valued different depending on the background and level of knowledge of the person who designs the breeding program. In order to achieve sustainable production, all aspects must be examined and evaluated in a similar way. Breeding for sustainable production requires great knowledge and reflection so that no important trait should disappear, and that genetic diversity should be retained.
