Abstract

Lastning och transport av hästar är riskfyllt både för hästen och de som handhar hästen. Dels är risken för traumatiska skador stor både för människor och hästar men även ökar risken för ett flertal sjukdomar hos hästen. Hästen utsätts för en rad stressande faktorer så som lastning och avlastning, begränsad möjlighet till rörelse, isolering om hästen transporteras ensam, samt ofta ingen tillgång till vatten och foder. Hästar är sociala flockdjur och isolering leder till stress vilket innebär ett stort problem när många hästar transporteras ensamma. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka om ett fotografi av ett hästhuvud uppsatt i hästtransporten kunde ha en lugnande effekt på hästar som transporteras ensamma. I studien lastades 24 hästar två gånger var i en hästtransport med en kort paus mellan varje lastning. En gång lastades de med ett fotografi uppsatt i transporten och en gång utan och ordningen varierades slumpmässigt mellan hästarna. Under lastningarna mättes hästarnas hjärtfrekvens och deras beteenden registrerades.

Resultat och konklusion: Det fanns ingen statistiskt signifikant skillnad i hjärtfrekvens eller beteende mellan lastningarna med och utan hästfotografi vilket innebär att fotografiet inte hade någon lugnande effekt. Däremot var det en signifikant lägre hjärtfrekvens och frekvens av stressade beteenden vid andra lastningen jämfört med vid första lastningen. Sannolikt hade de vid andra lastningen börjat vänja sig vid transporten vilket innebär att även en kort habitueringsträning kan göra skillnad för hästen och kanske även göra lastningen säkrare för både häst och människa.

Loading and transportation of horses is dangerous both for the horses and the handlers. There is a high risk of traumatic injuries both for the handlers as well as for the horses and there is also an increased risk of various diseases for the horses during transportation. The horse is subject to several stressful factors such as loading and unloading, limited mobility, isolation if the horse is transported by itself, as well as often no access to food or water. Horses are social herd animals and isolation causes stress which is a significant problem since horses are often transported alone. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a photography of a horse’s head posted in the horse trailer could have a calming effect on horses transported alone. In the study 24 horses were loaded twice each into a horse trailer with a short break in between. Once the horses were loaded with a photography posted in the trailer and once without, and the order in which they were loaded was randomized. When the horses were loaded into the trailer their heart rate was measured and their behavior registered.

Result and conclusion: There were no statistically significant difference in heart rate or behavior between the loadings with or without the horse photography which means that the photography didn’t have a calming effect. However the heart rate and the frequency of stressful behaviors were significantly lower at the second loading compared to the first loading. At the second loading the horses had probably started to get used to the horse trailer and this means that even short habituation training can make a difference for the horse and maybe also make loading safer for both the horse and the handler.
