Abstract

Syftet med detta arbete var att studera basala urinkoncentrationer av hormonerna kortisol och serotonin samt resultat från Beteende- och Personlighetsbeskrivning Hund (BPH) hos fjorton icke kastrerade labrador retrievers. Elva tikar och tre hanar ingick i studien. På grund av att ett lågt antal individer ingick i studien kunde inga statistiska analyser göras mellan hundarnas hormonkoncentrationer och resultaten på BPH. Resultaten diskuterades i stället deskriptivt. Två urinprover togs i hundarnas hemmiljö, ett kvällsprov och ett morgonprov. Eftersom endast tre hanar ingick i studien gjordes de statistiska hormonanalyserna endast på tikarna. Inga signifikanta skillnader uppmättes mellan tikarnas kvällsprov och morgonprov för något av hormonerna. Ett registerutdrag från BPH bearbetades för de 898 labrador retrievers som dittills genomfört BPH för att kunna jämföra de fjorton hundarna med ett större urval. Dessutom fick hundägarna till de fjorton hundarna i en enkät svara på några frågor om sin hunds beteende. Enkätsvaren pekade på att hundarna uppvisade mer osäkerhet och rädslor än vad som framgick av deras resultat på BPH. I arbetets bilaga presenteras även alla individdata för studiens fjorton hundar. De relativt stora individuella variationerna som kunde ses diskuterades här deskriptivt. Sammanfattningsvis visade den subjektiva analysen av hundarnas hormonnivåer och resultaten från BPH att det tycktes finnas samband mellan hormonnivåer och några beteendekategorier på BPH, men detta behöver utvärderas vidare på ett större antal hundar. Det hade varit intressant att göra en jämförelse mellan ett större antal tikar och hanar för att undersöka könsskillnader samt ytterligare samband mellan fysiologiska förändringar och beteendebeskrivningar. Framtida studier inom området är därför önskvärda.

The aim of this study was to investigate basal urine concentrations of the hormones cortisol and serotonin, and results from a Swedish behaviour and personality test for dogs “Beteende- och Personlighetsbeskrivning Hund” (BPH) in fourteen intact Labrador retriever dogs. Three males and eleven bitches were included in the study. Due to the fact that a low number of individuals were included in the study, no statistical analyses could be made between the dogs’ hormone concentrations and the results on BPH. Instead, the results were discussed descriptively. Two urine samples were taken in the dogs’ home environment, an evening sample and a morning sample. Since only three males were included in the study, the statistical hormone analyses were performed only on the bitches. No significant differences were found between the bitches’ evening sample and morning sample for any of the hormones. A register extract from BPH was processed from 898 Labrador retrievers that so far carried out BPH to be able to compare the fourteen dogs with a larger group of dogs. The owners of the fourteen dogs also answered some questions about their dogs’ behaviour. The questionnaire included in the study indicated that the dogs exhibited more uncertainty and fears than the results on BPH showed. Individual data is presented for the fourteen dogs in the appendix. The relatively large individual variations in the dogs that participated in the study were discussed descriptively. In summary, the subjective analysis of the dogs’ hormone levels and the results of BPH showed that there appeared to be a relationship between hormone levels and some of the behavioral categories on BPH, but this needs to be further investigated in a larger group of dogs. It would have been interesting to compare a larger number of bitches and males to investigate gender differences as well as further relationship between physiological changes and behavioural descriptions. Future studies in the field are therefore desirable.
