Abstract

Denna uppsats syftar till att synliggöra exkluderande strukturer och processer i stadsplaneringen för att få en djupare förståelse för hur människor tar sig an sitt landskap och de rum de befinner sig i. Ambitionen är att förstå hur människor kan ta staden i anspråk. Kontexten är den förtätade staden där den offentliga platsens öppna och demokratiska funktion hotas av förändringar i tillgänglighet och funktion. Uppsatsen undersöker trender där privatisering tar offentlig mark i anspråk och kommersialiseringens dominans över innerstadens rum försvårar möjligheten för människor att uttrycka motstånd och vara medskapare av staden. Dessa trender bidrar till att vissa grupper blir exkluderade medan andra grupper prioriteras. Rummens fysiska utformning tillsammans med mentala föreställningar kan skapa sociala barriärer som påverkar hur fria människor känner sig att ta staden i anspråk. Exempel tas i stadsdelen Norra Sorgenfri i Malmö där områdets historia av radikala kulturyttringar och ianspråktagande av rummen blivit en del i stadens imageskapande för att konkurrera om invånare och kapital. Malmö stads ambition att programmera området för personliga och kreativa uttryck ifrågasätts och belyser paradoxen i att planera för det oplanerade.

This thesis aims to reveal excluding structures and processes in the planning of cities to gain a deeper understanding for the human experience of landscape and space. The ambition is to understand how people can gain the right to the city, and claim it as their own. The setting is the densified city where the independence of the public place is threatened by changes in accessibility and use. The thesis reviews trends where privatisation claims the public space and the commodification of the city centre prevents people to express resistance and be co-creators of the city. These trends contribute to the exclusion of some groups while other groups are prioritized. The physical organisation of space together with the mental image of it can create social barriers that affects how free people feel to claim the city as their own. Examples are made in the district Norra Sorgenfri in Malmö which has a history of radical manifestations of culture/art and appropriation of space. Malmö has worked with this in the creation of the city image. The ambition to program the district to a place where creative and unique appropriation takes place are questioned in the thesis and the paradox in planning for the unplanned is highlighted.
