Abstract

Då en häst presterar sämre än förväntat vill man hitta orsaken. Det är inte alltid helt lätt att hitta vad som ligger bakom den försämrade prestationen, men ekvint herpesvirus tros kunna vara en orsak. Ekvint herpesvirus finns utbrett i de flesta hästpopulationer runtom i världen, och de flesta hästar infekteras under sitt första levnadsår. Hos unga hästar ses ofta kliniska symptom, medan symptomen hos äldre hästar ofta är subkliniska. Denna litteraturstudie syftar till att studera ifall hästens prestationsförmåga påverkas av infektion med ekvint herpesvirus. Många studier har studerat sambandet mellan ekvint herpesvirus och försämrad prestation hos hästar, och kommit fram till olika resultat. Olika infektioner, även subkliniska, kan påverka hästens prestationsförmåga. I denna litteraturstudie har främst fokuserats på infektioner som drabbar luftvägarna och påverkar hästens förmåga att syresätta sig, och som följd av detta försämrar prestationsförmågan. Dålig prestation har visat sig vara svårt att mäta objektivt. Av de fem herpestyperna som drabbar hästar är det EHV-1, -2, -4 och -5 som man i vissa studier kunnat koppla till försämrad prestation, antingen direkt eller indirekt. Alfaherpesvirusen EHV-1 och -4 har sedan innan kopplats samman med sjukdomar, och därför ansetts vara patogena redan en längre tid. Gammaherpesvirusen EHV-2 och -5 har man senare börjat associera med olika sjukdomar.

Man har inte kunnat se samband mellan ekvint herpesvirus och nedre luftvägsinfektioner. Däremot har man sett samband mellan bakterier och nedre luftvägsinfektioner. Det kan vara så att herpesvirus kan predisponera för bakterier genom att dämpa immunförsvaret, och på så sätt indirekt orsaka infektion som påverkar hästens prestationsförmåga. I nyare studier har man inte sett något samband mellan dålig prestation och prov som är positiva för virus. Man har heller inte sett något samband mellan mängden utsöndrat EHV-2 och -5 och dålig prestation. Däremot har man kunnat se ett samband mellan EHV-5 och den nyligen upptäckta lungsjukdomen equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis.

Det är inte ovanligt att hästar har magsår. Det har studerats ifall ekvint herpesvirus är orsaken till magsår på hästar, på samma sätt som bakterien Helicobacter pylori orsakar magsår hos människor. Man har dock inte kunnat bevisa något som tyder på att ekvint herpesvirus är orsaken till magsår på hästar.

Sammantaget kan man säga, att i väldigt få fall kan man se att ekvint herpesvirus direkt påverkar hästens prestationsförmåga.

Sometimes horses do not perform as well as they are expected to do, without any obvious reason. In these cases, you want to find the reason so that you hopefully can prevent it from affecting the performance again. Equine herpesvirus is theorised to be one cause of poor performance. Equine herpesvirus is widespread in most horse populations all over the world. Most horses get infected during their first year of life. The infection is usually subclinical in adult horses, but young horses usually show clinical signs when they are infected. This study aims to investigate if the performance of horses is affected by infection with equine herpesvirus. There are many studies that have investigated if there is any association between equine herpesvirus and poor performance in horses, and there are different conclusions about this. It seems poor performance is hard to measure in an objective way, which may be one reason to different conclusions in studies. There are five different types of equine herpesvirus that affects horses, of these EHV-1, -2, -4 and -5 have been associated with poor performance in some studies. The alpha herpesviruses EHV-1 and -4 have long been associated with different diseases and are therefore seen as pathogenic types. The gamma herpesviruses EHV-2 and -5 was long thought to be non-pathogenic types but has later been associated with diseases.

Any association between equine herpesviruses and lower airway disease has not been observed. On the other hand, an association between bacterial infections and lower airway diseases has been seen. If equine herpesvirus can predispose for bacterial infections that cause respiratory diseases, one can say that equine herpesvirus indirectly causes respiratory diseases which affect the performance. In more recent studies no association between testes that are positive for virus and poor performance has been observed. Any association between the amount of EHV-2 and -5, and poor performance has not been seen. However, an association between EHV-5 and equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis, a recently recognized pulmonary disease in horses, can be detected.

Gastric ulcers are quite common in horses, but there is no evidence of any association between gastric ulcers and equine herpesvirus.

In summary one can say that in only few cases equine herpesvirus has been noted to affect the performance of the horse directly.
