Abstract

Vid skapandet av landskapsarkitektur är det en mängd olika kvaliteter som skall tas i åtanke. En av dem är skönhet. En upplevelse av skönhet är synonym med en upplevelse av något som vackert, gott, rätt. Listan över synonymer kan göras lång, men gemensamt är att de ger uttryck för en positiv känsla hos den som tolkar. Upplevelsen av skönhet är en upplevelse som spelar in när landskapsarkitekten värderar sin landskapsarkitektoniska handling. Det är därför intressant att fråga sig hur skönhet diskuteras och betydelsen av en sådan diskussion vid skapandet av landskapsarkitektur.

Målet med denna uppsats är att belysa diskussionen om skönhet för att kunna skapa en förståelse för hur sådana diskussioner förs vid skapandet av landskapsarkitektur. Detta görs genom en kombination av litteraturstudier och samtal med landskapsarkitektstuderande, lärare inom landskapsarkitektur och yrkesverksamma landskapsarkitekter via så kallade ’skönhetssalonger’.

Litteraturstudierna tillsammans med skönhetssalongerna har visat att landskapsarkitekten, vid diskussioner om skönhet, använder sig av termer som har sitt ursprung i tre olika discipliner: estetiken, etiken och miljöpsykologin. Landskapsarkitekten säger inte att något är vackert eller skönt utan istället att det har en harmoni, upplevs autentiskt, skapar mötesplatser eller möjligheter för en mångfald av olika aktiviteter.

Det är inte fult att vilja skapa vacker landskapsarkitektur. Det är inte heller nödvändigtvis svårt att tala om. Möjligheten till en relevant diskussion om skönhet handlar om att undkomma en situation där en persons subjektiva uppfattning står mot en annans. För att göra detta söker landskapsarkitekten efter objektivitet. Att finna metoder för att kunna göra relevanta uttalanden är tydlig inom alla de tre discipliner från vilka landskapsarkitekten hämtar sina termer.

Att diskutera skönhet handlar inte om att klassa en landskapsarkitektonisk lösning som bättre än en annan. Det handlar om att bli varse om vilken roll landskapsarkitektens egna upplevelse av vad som är skönt spelar när den samme skapar landskapsarkitektur. Det är därför relevant att uttrycka alla de tillfällen då den personliga uppfattningen om skönhet spelar in. För att kunna synliggöra sina val och på så sätt utvecklas som landskapsarkitekt

*********** In developing landscape architecture a variety of different qualities need to be considered. One of them is beauty. An experience of beauty is synonymous with an experience of something beautiful, good, right. The list of synonyms can be made extensive, yet all terms reflect a positive feeling that originates from the interpreter. The perception of beauty is an experience that comes
into play when the landscape architect evaluates his/her architectural performance. Thus, it is interesting to consider how beauty is discussed and the importance of such a discussion in the development of landscape architecture.

The aim of this paper is to elucidate the discussion of beauty in order to create an understanding of how such discussions take place within the development process of landscape architecture. This is done through a combination of literature studies and interviews with students of landscape architecture, teachers in landscape architecture and landscape architects
through so-called 'beauty salons'.

The literature review, along with the ‘beauty salons’, has shown that the landscape architect, in discussions about beauty, uses terms that have their origin in three different disciplines: aesthetics, ethics and environmental psychology. The landscape architect seldom claims that an object is beautiful or nice, but rather that it has harmony, is perceived authentic and creates venues or opportunities for a variety of different activities.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to create beautiful landscape architecture, nor is it necessarily difficult to talk about. The key to a relevant discussion is to avoid a situation where a person's subjective opinion is put against another's. To accomplish this, the landscape architect utilizes objectivity. Finding ways of making relevant statements is a common denominator amongst all three disciplines from which the landscape architect’s terminology concerning beauty is obtained.

To discuss beauty is not about rating one landscape architectural solutions as superior orinferior to another. It is about becoming aware of what role the landscape architect's own experience of beauty plays in the process of developing landscape architecture. Thus, it is important to express all occasions when considerations of personal perceptions of beauty come
into play, in order to make choices visible and thus develop as a landscape architect.
