Abstract

Syftet med detta arbete var att undersöka vilken kännedom svenska valp- och unghundsägare har om tandrelaterade problem och profylaktisk tandvård hos hund. En litteratursökning gjordes i avsikt att inhämta fakta om hundars munhälsa, de vanligaste tandrelaterade problemen hos hund, symptom på tandproblem och profylaktiska tandåtgärder. En enkätundersökning genomfördes för att få svar på frågeställningen om valpägarens kännedom.

Hundar kan drabbas av flera olika tandrelaterade problem och parodontala sjukdomar är vanligt förekommande hos hundar. Profylaktiska tandåtgärder är avgörande för att kunna upprätthålla en god tand- och munhälsa. Den profylaktiska tandvården som utförs av hundägarna i hemmet har en mycket betydande roll när det kommer till hundens tandhälsa och övergripande hälsostatus. Profylaktisk tandvård är även betydelsefullt för hundägaren ur ett ekonomiskt perspektiv, då det kan förhindra många och dyra tandåtgärder.

Resultatet omfattade totalt 205 stycken enkätsvar. Enkätresultatet visade att valpägarna har en generellt god kännedom om flera begrepp förknippade med tandproblem. De begreppen med lägst svarsrespons var medicinska termer. De kännetecken som valpägarna främst ansåg som indikationer på tandproblem var dålig andedräkt, rött/lättblödande tandkött och minskad matlust. Ett påtagligt antal färre respondenter angav att ökad salivering/dregel och bettfel kunde vara indikationer på tandproblem. Enkätresultatet visade även att 82 % av respondenterna svarade att de förebygger tandproblem hos sin hund. Dock var det endast 47 % av respondenterna som svarade att de förebygger tandproblem genom tandborstning, vilken är den effektivaste profylaktiska tandåtgärden.
Resultatet av enkätstudien visade att de valpägare som svarade hade en varierande kännedom kring tandproblem hos hund. Djurhälsopersonalen bör därför fortsätta sitt aktiva arbete med att få ut information om tandproblem, profylaktisk tandvård och vikten av tandborstning. Valpägarna behöver mer information om symptom på tandproblem och vad de bör tänka på för att undvika tandproblem hos sin valp och i framtiden hos sin vuxna hund. Djurhälsopersonalen bör dock vara noga med att välja vilka medicinska termer de använder i sin dialog med hundägaren och inte glömma att ge en förklaring till dessa.

Sammanfattningsvis bör information, om hundars tandproblem, ges i större omfattning av djurhälsopersonalen till valpägare och uppfödare.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to investigate Swedish puppy and young dog owners’ knowledge of dental problems and prophylactic dental care in dogs. A literature search was made with the aim of collecting knowledge about oral health in dogs, the most common teeth-related problems, symptoms of dental problems and prophylactic dental care. A survey was conducted to answer the question about puppy owners’ knowledge.

Dogs can suffer from several dental problems and periodontal diseases are common in dogs. Prophylactic dental measures are vital to maintain a good oral and dental health. The dental care performed at home by the dog owners play a very important role in the dog's dental health and overall health status. Prophylactic dental care is also important for the dog owner from an economic perspective, as it can prevent expensive dental measures.

The result included a total of 205 questionnaires. The results from the survey showed that the puppy owners generally had good knowledge about several concepts associated with dental problems. The concepts that had the lowest response rate were medical terms. The characteristics that puppy owners primarily associated with dental problems were halitosis, red/easy bleeding gums and reduced appetite. A significant lower number of respondents believed that increased salivation/drool and malocclusion could be indications of dental problems. The result also showed that 82 % of respondents responded that they prevent teeth problems in their dog. However, only 47 % of respondents responded that they prevent through toothbrushing, which is the most effective prophylactic dental procedure.

The result of the survey showed that the owners who responded had a varied knowledge of dental problems in dogs. Animal health personnel should therefore continue their active work on giving out information on dental problems, prophylactic dental care and the importance of brushing teeth. Puppy owners need to be informed more about symptoms of dental problems and what they should keep in mind to avoid dental problems in their puppy. Animal health personnel should, however, be careful about the medical terms they choose to use in dialogue with the dog owners and not forget to explain them if needed.

In summary, information from animal health staff to puppy owners and breeders about tooth problems in dogs should be given to a greater extent.
