Abstract

Dairy cow lameness is a substantial animal welfare problem. Pain from the cow’s locomotion apparatus causes difficulties by restricting movement, thereby yielding shorter feeding time and less obvious reproductive behaviour. This can lead to reduced milk production, lower fertility and increased risk of culling, all having a negative impact on the production economy. Lameness is considered the third most significant cause of economic losses in dairy, only topped by actual fertility problems and mastitis.

This study summarizes existing literature to gain an overview of the most common methods of subjective lameness scoring of dairy cows, and to elucidate what factors need to be considered during observations to establish the status of the animal’s locomotion apparatus.

Subjective lameness scoring in dairy cows allows visual assessment of large numbers of animals without the need for technical equipment. An experienced observer well versed in the method used is required to achieve a reliable scoring. There are several methods frequently used for subjective lameness scoring. In this work, focus is placed on the commonly used methods by Sprecher, Flower & Weary and Manson & Leaver. These methods all utilize similar parameters, such as the behaviour, posture and the movement pattern of the cow, that have been shown to work well practically. However, the methods do differ in, for example, how detailed the scoring is and how many scoring levels are used. This affects their practical use. When considering routine lameness scoring in the daily operation of a farm, more simple methods with fewer scoring levels are preferred. A higher number of scoring levels can allow for greater detail in for example academic studies. Research suggests that the simpler methods show better agreement between observers, but also that less specific assessment criteria yield a concurrent greater risk for misjudgement. A significant problem is the discrepancy between farmers and external observers. Farmers frequently underestimate the prevalence of lameness in a population. Potential reasons for this include the lack of routine in using the scoring method, and desensitization due to the farmer being exposed to lame cows on a daily basis. It may also be difficult to interpret the locomotion pattern and behaviour of the cow as lameness is not the only influencing factor. Environmental factors also play a role, such as the friction of the floor, age, parity, the presence of the observer, and also animal-related aspects such as the presence of high-ranking animals. All these factors make for a challenging task for the lameness scoring observer who needs to understand the behaviour of the cow as well as take in the whole general picture at the time of the observation.

It can be concluded that regular use of a practically applicable method for subjective lameness scoring of dairy cow herds would enable earlier detection and treatment of lame cows. The method should be simple enough to be user-friendly but comprehensive enough to discover small pain-related changes. Such lameness scoring would improve animal welfare and production economy. Thus, lameness scoring should be as an integral part of the animal healthrelated work as surveillance of the udder and fertility.
