Abstract

Potato late blight is caused by the aggressive oomycete Phytophthora infestans, that if it gets a grip of the potato-field can quickly destroy the crop and cause major economic consequences for the farmer. Because the pathogen is aggressive, strategies to control it are necessary. In Sweden there are no effective pesticides that can be used in organic production, the farmers only have cultivation techniques to apply. In this literature study different organisms and substances that have the possibility to be approved for organic potato production in Sweden has been studied, such as bacteria, fungi, one oomycet, oils and extracts from plants, and a chemical low risk substance. The methods that the treatments were studied with include in vitro, detached leaf assay, plants in greenhouse and field studies. Most of the studies were made in laboratory environment and few were made under field conditions. The treatments inhibit P. infestans directly by toxic substances or mycoparasitism, or by initiating induced resistance in the plant. None of the organisms or substances that have been studied give a total disease control, but several of them show positive results that with more research and development can become effective treatments by themselves or in combination with other treatments.
