Abstract

Vintern är för många svenskar en mörk och kall period där de längtar efter vårens ankomst. Detta examensarbete undersöker vad en landskapsarkitekt kan göra för att lindra vinterdepression och pessimistisk vintermentalitet. Vilka redskap kan användas i den fysiska miljön som lockar till aktivitet, upplevelse och interaktion under mörka och kalla årstider?

Den första, teoretiska delen av uppsatsen, behandlar vinterstadens problematik och förutsättningar. Faktorer som dagsljus, tillgänglighet, god orienterbarhet, stimuli och tillgång till sociala och valbara aktiviteter påverkar hur mycket människor rör sig ute under vintern. En illa anpassad utemiljö kan leda till isolering och vinterdepression, så kallad Seasonal affective disorder. För att minska denna isolering ställs stora krav på den fysiska utformningen av våra gemensamma livsmiljöer vintertid.

I uppsatsens andra del, redovisas vår fallstudie av en vinterinstallation genom gestaltnings process, praktiskt utförande och följande observationsstudier i januari 2018. Vinterinstallationen innehåller termisk komfort och upplevelse värden för besökare och ligger i Döbelns park i Umeå.

Diskussionen i uppsatsens slutliga del ställer lärdomar från gestaltningsarbetet mot teorier från litteraturstudien. Resultatet av installationen och litteraturstudien indikerar att en mer positiv och optimistisk mentalitet kring vinter kan generera bättre livskvalitet med mindre påfrestning och isolering. För att skapa vinteroptimism krävs en förändring av sociala normer tillsammans med en förbättring av den fysiska miljön. Vi behöver dra nytta av vintern istället för att skydda oss från den. Den främsta slutsatsen för arbetet är att det är möjligt att skapa intressanta utemiljöer som fungerar under vinterhalvåret och som kan förlänga människors utevistelse samt förbättra hälsa och inställning till vintern.

For some, winter feels like endless darkness where they rather hibernate and wait for the spring. This thesis examines what a landscape architect could do to reduce the stress of Seasonal Affective Disorder and the pessimistic mentality of winter. What tools can be used in the physical environment to attract activity, experience and interaction during the prolonged dark and cold seasons?

The first, theoretical part, of the thesis deals with the problems and conditions of the winter city. Factors such as daylight, accessibility, good orientation, stimuli and access to social activities affect how often people spend time outdoors during winter. An inappropriately designed outdoor environment can create isolation and Seasonal Affective Disorder. To reduce this isolation, great demands are placed on the physical design of our outdoor public spaces, also in the winter.

The second part of this thesis is a pilot study of a winter installation, containing the design process, the practical execution followed by observations in january 2018. The site of the winter installation is Döbelns park in Umeå where we create thermal comfort and experiences for visitors.

The final part of the thesis involves a comparison of conclusions from the the execution of the winter installation from the literature study. The results indicate that an increased positive and optimistic attitude towards winter could generate a better quality of life with reduced stress and isolation. To create winter optimism, change in social norms is required together with an improvement of the physical environment. We need to take advantage of winter qualities instead of protecting ourselves from them. The main finding of this thesis is that it is possible to create interesting outdoor environments that functions during the winter and which will increase people’s outdoor activities, health and winter mentality.
