Abstract

The fastest and the greatest change in average air temperature is ex-pected in the North and South Pole. As a result, when air temperature rises so do the water temperature and a change in vegetation can be seen. This could be the reason for the nutritional depletion that occurs in many Arctic lakes. However, the cause of oligotrophication has not been clarified. A research group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences studies how the Arctic freshwater ecosystems are affected by oligotrophication as a result of climate change. Stable isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are often used when studying nutrient flows and food webs in ecosystems. The composition of 13C and 15N in aquatic organisms increases with 0,8‰ and 3,4‰ respectively for each trophy level. The difference in the isotopic composition between an animal and its diet is called trophic fractionation. In this study, the aquatic larvae of Chironomus Riparius (C. riparius) is cultured with three different food sources (Alder leaf, TetraMin® and Chlorella sp.) in three different tem-peratures (15 °C, 18 °C and 23 °C). The aim is to examine the influence of temperature on trophic fractionation of C and N in the plant-consumer interference. The results will help the research group to interpret paleolimnological data, such as sediment cores from Arctic lakes. An isotopic analysis of subfossils in the sediment cores, for example headcapsules from C. riparius, can be used to reconstruct weather con-ditions and species composition in lakes thousands of years back in time. This can help researchers to predict and anticipate the ecological effects of climate change.
In this study the trophic fractionation was calculated with two different outcomes: in one calculation the isotopic composition in the fresh food was used and in the other calculation the isotopic composition of the accumulated food was used. The results show that temperature has a significant effect on the 13C-fractionation in C. riparius that were fed with TetraMin®, in both outcomes, were the 13C-fractionation decreased with increasing temperature. However, it is likely that the lipid content in C. riparius causes the correlation between the 13C-fractionation and tem-perature. After a mathematical lipid normalization the affect of temperature on the 13C-fractionation can not be seen. The temperature does not affcet the 15N-fractionation in C. riparius fed with TetraMin®. Isotopic data of larvae fed with Chlorella sp. were only obtained from two tem-peratures and the standard deviation was high. Hence no conclusions from these data are taken. In the treatment with alder leaves as a food source the mortality was 100 % and therefore values are missing. With the results of this study, it is considered that the isotopic composition in the accumulated food should be used in fractionation calculations, due to that the accumulated food is more likely to reflect the isotopic composition under natural conditions. A lipid normalization should also be made since the lipid content can led to misinterpretations. The conclusion is that when analyzing paleolimnological samples there is no need to correct for temperature in isotopic analyzes in order to reconstruct abiotic and biological conditions in lakes.
