Abstract

The production pressure in today’s dairy industry is very high which means great stress on the highly producing dairy cows. Breeding on specific production traits have led to weak signs for estrus, limiting their chance to get pregnant, in addition to risk for uterine infection, nega-tive energy balance and other disturbances during the postpartum period. This leads to a decreased milk yield and increase in treatment costs. The change from being pregnant to start synthesising milk leads to negative energy balance, due to the short period to reallocate the energy reserves. This literature summation focus on the changes in the genitals associated with calving. As well as the factors increasing the risk for dairy cattle to develop uterine dis-ease. The immune defence plays a major role in fighting the pathogens that contaminate the uterus after parturition, especially if the cow is affected by negative energy balance or other disorders postpartum. It is very important that the uterus of the cow undergoes involution, a process including degeneration of uterine tissue as well as elimination of the pathogens that may invade the uterus during parturition and postpartum. Disturbance in the involution means risk for uterine infections and untreated uterine infection can lead to infertility, early culling and great economic losses. Greater knowledge about the factors causing uterine disease and how to prevent it is of great interest.
