“Change of knowledge in Swedish gardening handbooks from 1840 to 1950” is a
bachelor thesis in Landscape architecture at the Swedish University of Agricultural
Sciences at the location Alnarp. The intent of the thesis is to investigate the
knowledge and competence development within gardening handbooks in Sweden
during the period of 1840 to 1950. How does the knowledge change, which
knowledge disappears, which knowledge is kept and which new knowledge is
added? The study is based on a total of thirteen gardening handbooks. The
exploring of knowledge through history is limited to a handful of specific topics, the
proper time for irrigation and which water to irrigate with, the soil, manure,
fertilizers, the plantation of fruit trees and in that subject also the manual labor
involved such as digging the planting pit, fertilizing, proper time for plantation, the
actual plantation and fruit tree replanting. The study finds development in
knowledge and also knowledge loss.
