Abstract

In Sweden there are a number of crisis shelters where people who have been exposed to threats and domestic violence in the couple relationship can go for help and shelter. The aim of this paper is to focus on the women who currently are forced to live at a crisis shelters, this because of that they are significantly more than the men. Common for those women is that they are in a crisis situation in life and suffer from stress and concern because of what they have been exposed to. Another common factor for those women is that they tend to spend most of their days inside the building.
The housing shortage in Sweden makes it hard for many women to leave the crisis shelters and it results in that they have to stay for several months or sometimes years. This even though a crisis shelter is meant to work as a temporary accommodation.
After increased immigration to Sweden from other countries, many women with foreign background lives at the crisis shelters today. This because of that they often don´t have an established network in Sweden. Therefore, a sheltered accommodation becomes the most common place for them to seek for help and protection.
This paper explores the possibilities and the potential impact the outdoor environment can have on these women and to see how garden therapy can be a tool in a rehabilitation. With a population from diverse origins we should see to different needs and try to get a new understanding and combinations of how we can use our outdoor environment. See to the outdoor environments great impact that it may have on us and how to manage the women to take the step outside.
