Abstract

Themed landscapes have been a part of human life for over 4000 years. Staged settings were an early adopted strategy in parks and brought forth the development of fairs and pleasure gardens. During modern days world fairs and amusement parks have been the activities that made the opening of the first theme parks possible in the mid-2000th century. Themed landscapes and amusement rides have existed for some time. The new and unique quality with theme parks is the use of one uniting theme that organizes every component of the park; with the ambition to create a multisensory and theatric escape of everyday life.
Liseberg amusement park opened in 1923 as part of the 300 year celebration of Gothenburg. During the 1970s Liseberg became the number one tourist destination in Sweden. In recent times efforts have been made to transform the separate components of the amusement park into one cohesive experience. In the year of 2013 Liseberg bought land south of the existing park. The following year they released plans to expand the park south, and open up a second gate. The purpose of this master thesis has been to present an alternative masterplan for the development of the southern expansion of Liseberg. As part of the thesis I have carried out a literature study for the purpose of investigating the historical and site specific conditions. I have in addition carried out a second literature study for the purpose of investigating the methods used by contemporary theme park designers as preparation of my own design.
In the development of my masterplan I have followed the working methods presented by architect Miodrag Mitrašinović and professor in tourism geography Salvador Anton Clavé. The design process of a theme park is initiated with the development of a concept in which the main components of the park are defined and a comprehensive theme is chosen. In the following program the head attractions of the park are chosen, the overall spatiality is defined and the different areas of the park are given their own themed identity. The next step in the design process, and the final product of this master thesis, is the creation of a masterplan. In the masterplan the layout, infrastructure and supporting attractions are defined, meanwhile the spatial organization is developed further.
In my historic analysis I identified the internationalization and the east India trade as important characters in the development of Gothenburg. This is the reason I have chosen East India as the comprehensive theme which along the other components of the southern expansion are organized. I am proposing that the new park should be arranged as a journey with the Swedish East India Company. The journey will take its start in 1800th century Gothenburg and continue via the East India archipelago and with India and China as its final destination. On the journey the park visitors will learn exciting stories, go on wild amusement rides and are given the opportunity to try out their physical abilities.
The master thesis ends with a discussion of the working methods that I have utilized. During the project I have found a complex of problems within the many different fields of professions that are involved. The thesis is in itself an academic text with a requirement of a linear process and a deeper analytic ability that resembles the working method of physical science. As a landscape architect I have utilized the intuitive architect method of sketching as well as trying to find the spirit of the place. The theme park is on the other hand a product of entertainment which has its fundamentals in creativity and storytelling. I see a clear distinction between the different approaches within these methods. It would have been interesting to see a study carried out in the future examining the application of the architect methods in theme park design.
