Abstract

This composition is a compilation of literature based on research on etiology and morphology of prostatic carcinomas in dogs. The literature search was performed in the databases Web of Knowledge and PubMed.

Prostate-related problems are often seen in older men and older male dogs. The number of individuals developing prostate cancer also increases with age, but the condition doesn’t occur as frequently as other prostate diseases. In the dog, the prevalence of prostatic carcinoma is believed to be approximately 0.6 %.

The etiology of prostatic carcinomas in dogs is not fully understood and several hypotheses have been presented. Possible explanations are age, castration, estrogen, COX-2, nutrition, genetic factors, PIN and benign hyperplasia. These hypotheses are described and discussed in this composition. It's possible that several factors are important in tumor development, but results from performed research are
inconclusive.

More research is needed to explain why tumors arise in the prostate in dogs. If we understand the mechanisms underlying the development of prostatacarcinom we may be able to design preventive treatment. This would result in decreased incidence and a healthier dog population. Since the dog functions as an animal model for human prostatic diseases, a determined etiology also would be of great use in human medicine.
