Abstract

Ultrasound is still a relatively new method for the diagnosis of abdominal conditions in cattle. The objective of this study is to evaluate ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for the common diseases affecting high-producing dairy cattle, for example traumatic reticuloperitonitis, right- and left displacement of the abomasum, fatty liver, wound infections and abscesses. This paper is a combined litterature study and a report of the results from ultrasound examinations of bovine patients at the ruminant clinic at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The study includes two healthy cows from the ruminant clinic, and seven patients with abdominal related diseases.

The examinations were made with a 2-6 MHz curvilinear transducer and both the right and left sides of the abdomen were scanned. A common denominator for the diseases that are discussed in this paper is that they occur frequently in the bovine population, and that they can be difficult to diagnose correctly. It can also be difficult to make an accurate assessment of the prognosis for these conditions. The latter is important as it often affects the choice of treatment. Ultrasound has proven to be a suitable tool for making a correct diagnosis and prognosis of the above listed diseases.

Ultraljud är ännu en relativt oprövad metod för diagnosticering av bukåkommor
på nötkreatur. Syftet med det här arbetet är att utvärdera ultraljud som hjälpmedel
vid diagnostik av vanliga sjukdomar hos högproducerande mjölkkor, expempelvis
traumatisk reticuloperitonit, höger- och vänstersidig löpmagsförskjutning,
leverförfettning, sårinfektioner och abcsesser. Arbetet är en kombinerad
litteraturstudie och en sammanställning av de erfarenheter som gjorts i samband
med ultraljudsundersökning av patienter vid kliniken för idisslarmedicin, SLU. I
försöket ingick två friska försökskor som referens för bukens normala utseende
vid ultraljudsundersökning, och sju patienter med bukrelaterade åkommor.
Undersökningarna gjordes med en 2-6 MHz kurvilinjär transducer och buken
undersöktes från höger och vänster sida. Gemensamt för de sjukdomar som tas
upp är att de är vanligt förekommande inom nötpopulationen och att de ibland kan
vara svåra att diagnostisera kliniskt eller ställa en korrekt prognos för. Det
sistnämnda är nog så viktigt då det ofta påverkar val av behandling. Ultraljud har
visat sig väl lämpat för att ställa diagnos och för att ge en korrekt prognos för
ovan listade sjukdomar.
