Abstract

This essay investigates with an inductive in-case approach how to handle the cultural historic values of urban industrial areas in conversion processes and urban planning. The basis of the assay is in the form of a theory chapter which include perspective on cultural heritage processes, the values of industrial landscapes as well as its legal protection. To complement the theory with important planning methodologies a case study has been made covering both the planned development of Nyhamnen in Malmö as well as the preservation of a valuable industrial landscape in Norrköping. The aspects that are discussed in the essay are the industrial landscape’s values, threats and protection, methods and critera for preservation but also how to use it as a sustainable resource in urban planning. Overall, the general conclusion is that the industrial landscape is connected with great qualities as cultural heritage and should be handled with caution in the urban conversion processes, especially if there is a lack of antiquarian skills and knowledge.
