Abstract

Denna uppsats är ett försök att kombinera de vetenskapliga disciplinerna konst- och bildvetenskap samt landskapsarkitektur. Målsättningen är att besöka en gravplats för att sedan beskriva och tolka dess betydelse.
Detta genomförs med en hermeneutisk metod samt Foucaults teori om heterotopi. De frågor som används som ingång i materialet är följande: Hur präglas den specifika platsen/landskapet av död? Finns det några kopplingar mellan det temporära i livet och det temporära i landskapet? Hur är landskap som präglas av död och temporalitet viktiga för människan? Uppsatsen inleds med en diskussion om vikten av tolkning och hur detta leder till kunskap. I analysdelen diskuteras fyra platselement och deras betydelse utifrån metod, teori och frågeställning. Därefter diskuteras tre hermeneutiska tolkningsramar och hur dessa har påverkat
tolkningsprocessen. Avslutningsvis förenas tolkningarna av platselementen samt tolkningsramarna i en sammanfattande tolkning. Detta påvisar en tolkning där gravplatsen präglas av död, anonymitet och gemenskap. Vidare lyfts insikten om att besökaren kommer att dö och begravas i ett liknande landskap som det tolkade. Den sista frågeställningen diskuterar betydelsen av dödens landskap för människan. Dessa dödens landskap är platser där det overkliga tillåts möta det verkliga, alltså platser för reflektion kring döden. Slutligen leder uppsatsen till en oanad insikt om symbolens betydelse för individens utveckling. Dessutom
har uppsatsen lyft flertalet nya frågor, där den kanske viktigaste är: hur skapar en landskapsarkitekt meningsfulla platser och landskap?

This essay is an attempt to combine the scientific disciplines of art and visual studies, as well as landscape
architecture. The aim is to visit a burial site to describe and interpret its meaning. This is done by using a
hermeneutical method and Foucault's theory of heterotopias. The main questions applied to the material are the following: How is the specific site/landscape characterized by death? Are there any connections between the temporality of life and the temporality of the landscape? In what way are landscapes, characterized by death and temporality, important to man? The essay begins with a discussion about the importance of interpretation and how it leads to increased understanding and knowledge. The analysis section discusses four significant site elements and their significance, based on the method, the theory and the questions raised. Thereafter, three different hermeneutical frameworks, and how these have influenced the interpretation
process, are discussed. In conclusion, the interpretations of the site elements and the interpretative framework are combined in a final interpretation. In this interpretation the graveyard is characterized by death, but also anonymity and a collective athmosphere. Furthermore, the interpretation leads to the insight that the visitor himself one day will die and be buried in a similar landscape as the one interpreted. The last question leads to a discussion about the landscape of death and its significance to man. The landscape of death discussed is a place where the surreal is allowed to engage with the real, in other words, aa place that encourages reflection on death. Finally, the paper leads to an insight that was not intended, namely the
significance of the symbol for the development of the individual. In addition, the essay has raised several new questions, where perhaps the most important is: how does a landscape architect create meaningful places and landscapes?
